Wet felting fun! October 5, 9 a.m. - Noon Join us for a creative time around wool and fellowship! In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of loose wool becoming a fabric (felt). This textile art technique has been used for millenniums in the making of rugs, clothing, and homes (yurts). Instructor Sylviane Collier will demonstrate the technique, taking you step-by-step through the project and providing guidance along the way so you may enjoy the creative process and let your inner artist take the lead. First you will create your own picture by layering wool fibers (you will have a wide selection of dyed merino wool to choose from) to finish with the binding of all the fibers using a wet felting technique. We will use bamboo mats, water and soap for the felting process. It is not a messy process, just a wet one. Towels will be provided. Each student will create a one-of-a-kind 8”x 8” “painting.” Images of flowers, landscapes and animals will be provided for inspiration. Students are also welcome to bring their own. A material fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. No prior experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! Wednesday, February 5 · 1 - 10 p.m. A day-long cypher and battle led by two notable hip hop artists, Johnny Lopez (Johnny 5) and Quentin Robinson (SpecialFX). Johnny5 was born in Oakland and is a Mexican/Latino professional Turf Dancer and the founder of TURFinc - a local Oakland/Bay Area-based company that instills positive changes in the community through dance. SpecialFX is a father of two, a Marine Corps Veteran and the founder of Movement4Movements. At CSUSM, they will share hip hop dance and culture with students, faculty, staff and the local community. The event includes guest lectures, dance workshops and a cypher featuring authentic hip hop dancers, performances, competitions and classes. Learn to wet felt a gorgeous flower! September 14, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Join this 3-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of loose wool becoming felt. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this workshop, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a hand bag, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary. A contemporary fine arts exhibition of innovative and traditional fiber art by regional artists. A juried show with juror Kate Stern. This annual art exhibition focuses on the discipline of fiber arts with functional and non-functional works such as sculptures, vessel forms, basketry, large-scale installations and more in textiles including paper, felt, fabrics, yarn and a variety of organic and inorganic materials.
