  • Chaired by Board Member Chris Birchby and Adrienne Birchby, this year’s theme is Currents. Contemporary art is a transformative force moving us to think and feel things in new ways, much as ocean currents direct the flow of water from one place to another. Join us for an exhilarating evening overlooking the shimmering waves in La Jolla as we celebrate contemporary art, artists, and their impact on our community -- the current that runs through us all. Guests will begin their night with cocktails and fine hors d'oeuvres, leading into a seaside dinner curated by Chef Tim Kolanko of Urban Kitchen Group. The night will come alive with an electrifying performance by singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter, complemented by vibrant live entertainment and dancing. This Indigenous Borderlands art exhibition consciously features intergenerational artists and incorporates multimedia forms, including sculpture, paintings, photographs, silk screen prints, installations, digital art, videos, and other cultural forms, that together speak to the visuality of the Indigenous borderlands of the Payomkawichum Kumeyaay on whose lands the Centro Cultural de la Raza stands and other respective Indigenous nations. The exhibited pieces offer a complex visual narrative of the Borderlands of Indigeneity, from which one might enunciate conflictive and regenerative processes of remembering, healing, reclaiming and being. • This show is sold out Noel Paul Stookey, with special guest Kevin Roth Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 4 to 6 p.m. San Diego Oasis at Rancho Bernardo, 17170 Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego 92128 Presented by San Diego Folk Heritage, www.sdfolkheritage.org General admission $35, Current SDFH members $25 Advance Tickets: www.TicketWeb.com Note: TicketWeb fees will add approximately $4 to each ticket We expect this concert to sell out and recommend you purchase tickets now. Noel Paul Stookey, who recently celebrated his 86th birthday and his 65th year as a recognized activist singer/songwriter, has been altering both the musical and ethical landscape of this country and the world for decades, both as the “Paul” of the legendary Peter, Paul and Mary and as an independent musician who passionately believes in bringing the spiritual into the practice of daily life. He has recorded over fifty albums, both as part of the legendary trio and as a soloist. With the recent death of Peter Yarrow and the 2009 death of Mary Travers, Noel is now the only living member of that trio. While acknowledging his history and the meaningful association with Peter and Mary, the trio perhaps best known for its blend of modern folk music and social activism, rallying support for safe energy, peace, and civil rights at some of the most iconic events in our history, including the 1963 March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr., Noel has stepped beyond the nostalgia of the folk era. Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionately passionate, Noel’s voice is known across this land, from the Wedding Song to In These Times. Nearly two million dollars, earned from his now-classic Wedding Song, were used to fund the work of other socially responsible artists, which inspired Noel in 2018, along with his daughter Liz Stookey Sunde, to launch Music to Life, a national nonprofit that connects socially conscious musicians with the training, resources, and mentorship they need to realize their bold visions for community change. “Stookey is the same brilliant impressionist, the same gangling comedian, and the same smooth vocalist he has always been. But outside of the group, (PPM), that made him famous, his versatility has expanded.”~ Salem Evening News Kevin Roth has been performing on our stage for years, and collaborating with Noel Stookey even longer. His career has taken him to a concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House. He will sing some songs with his rich baritone and play some tunes on his deviant dulcimer.

  • The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 20, the Joshua White Trio will be performing the Music of Johnny Mercer. Joshua White is one of the music scene’s most creative and technically accomplished pianists. Praised by legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock as having “immense talent” and lauded for his “daring and courageous approach to improvisation … on the cutting edge of innovation”, Joshua has distinguished himself as a formidable leader of distinct voice among his peers. Born and raised in Southern California, Joshua received early training at the piano and developed rapidly through rigorous study of both Western European Classical literature and the Black American Music traditions. Shortly after placing in the top two as a finalist of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, Joshua began concertizing as a soloist and musical collaborator all over the world -- and continues to maintain an active touring schedule throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia. Joshua White can most often be heard with his critically-acclaimed TRIO (featuring Karl McComas-Reichl, bass & Tyler Kreutel, drums), as well as these musical ensembles: The Mark Dresser Quintet, Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Ensemble, The Daniel Rosenboom Quartet, Steph Richards & Super Sense, and LANCASTER (featuring Eric Revis, bass; Jeff Parker, guitar; & Guillermo Brown, drums). Jazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet, Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Steph Johnson and a host of others. Rob has released six recordings as a leader, “Bass is the Space - Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White, Steph Johnson, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is "So In Love" — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, and others. Tyler Kreutel is a drummer/percussionist based in the Southern California area. Born and raised in San Diego, California, he took up the drums at the age of 12 in his middle school jazz band and hasn’t looked back since. Tyler graduated from The San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his Bachelors in Music Performance at California State University Long Beach. While in college Tyler began playing professionally in both the San Diego and Los Angeles area and has been doing so ever since. Tyler has had the great fortune of playing with many outstanding musicians including Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Henry Franklin, Joshua White, Marshall Hawkins, Steve Cotter and is one of the most in demand drummers in Southern California. He has taught at both The Orange County School of the Arts and Downey High School and is currently teaching at YLJC.

  • DISCO RIOT presents: S P A C E Rising Alliance Residency Showcase S P A C E Rising Showcase is the final presentation from Resident Artists Briele Melahn & Giovanna Francisco, Emily Sutherland & Jenna Wu-Cardona, and Karina Wilson & Patrick Li. Through a 10-week artist residency process in collaboration with DISCO RIOT’s community partners Malashock Dance, BalletCenter Studios, and Culture Shock San Diego, our selected Resident Artists delved into research and development of new works. Join us for the culminating event for this process, to see what their creative research and exploration has yielded. Tickets are by donation with no minimum donation amount. About the Artists and Their Works: Karina Wilson (she/her) is a San Diego-based mover with roots in LA. Trained in Balanchine and drawn to contemporary movement, she has explored her artistic style studying at Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Alonzo King LINES Ballet. Karina aspires to engage in diverse capacities, collaborating with others to play and innovate. Patrick Li envisions uniting people from diverse backgrounds through the universal language of dance. Growing up and training abroad, Patrick embraces dance as a potent art form for expressing individuality while exploring common ground. His current movement practice integrates digital innovation with movement to transcend traditional performance boundaries. Karina Wilson & Patrick Li aim to explore how individuals, partnerships, and communities navigate their diverse states of existence. Our focus is on unraveling the dynamics of personal presence, partnership interactions, and collective experience. Technology will subtly underpin these interactions, shaping our lens of interconnected human experiences. Briele Melahn is a newly relocated San Diego artist. After receiving her BFA through the Conservatory of Dance at Purchase College she has performed and presented original works in NYC. Melahn works with dance, improvisation, and collaboration to explore the intersection of original movement and intuitive humanness. Giovanna Francisco (she/her) is a San Diego-based movement artist. She graduated from UCSD with her BA in both dance and sociology with a minor in education studies. Giovanna has performed and created work in San Diego as both an independent artist and community dancer. Her movement practice centers dance as a tool for exploration and connection. Briele Melahn & Giovanna Francisco feel inclined to investigate pedestrian and performer boundaries within a live show context. We are questioning what it means to be authentic while simultaneously being on display in front of an audience. How can we merge performance and process? Jenna Wu-Cardona (they/them/she) is a queer and multiracial dancer and artist with roots in Los Angeles and San Diego. They studied education and dance at Scripps College and have since worked with Blue 13 Dance Company, DISCO RIOT’s 2024 Queer Mvmnt Fest, and Dance the Yard. Emily Jane Sutherland is a queer San Diego based artist who recently graduated from San Diego State with their Bachelors in Dance. Emily is a visual artist/ choreographer who uses various art mediums to transform spaces and elevate dance performance. Through the crossover of site-specific dance film with stagework and projection, Emily Jane Sutherland and Jenna Wu-Cardona’s piece will expand on common definitions and understandings of bodies. We question both how we can get more fully into and out of our queer, intersectional bodies in order to experience and bring about the most collective freedom. About the (R)evolution Mentorship Program The 2024 (R)evolution Mentorship Program was designed to offer San Diego-based young artists (ages 20-26) a cohort-style educational, immersive mentorship program focused on offering substantial and sustained support in transitional learning into the San Diego professional dance ecosystem. The program includes free dance classes, monthly professional development workshops and cohort meetings, check-ins with a uniquely designated DISCO RIOT mentors, opportunities to immerse in performance and event production, and a 10-week S P A C E Rising Residency as part of a culminating artistic project. Together we build critical skills for a healthy, autonomous, successful career in the field of dance. We believe the next phase of building a truly sustainable dance ecosystem in San Diego hinges on the integration of young artist voices. About DISCO RIOT: Our mission is to grow social consciousness and connection through collaborative, thought-provoking movement-based art in San Diego. • Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In this new workshop series, participants will learn about the many facets of portraiture, and their contrast between internal and external representations of the self, while touring artworks from MCASD's collection and new special exhibition, For Dear Life: Art, Medicine, and Disability. Every exploration of artwork – whether figurative or abstract, metaphorical or literal, or humorous or severe – examines the compositional and storytelling qualities of portraits and their power to communicate a message. Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary artmaking techniques and materials, including acrylic paint, colored pencil, and assemblage. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided if required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (eight days). Session Dates: Session dates in this series are: Session 1: Friday, August 23 and Friday, August 30 Session 2: Friday, September 13 and Friday, September 20 Session 3: Friday, September 27 and Friday, October 4 Session 4: Friday, October 11 and Friday, October 25 Daily Program: 10 a.m.: Gallery Discussion The conversations around the artworks in MCASD’s collection will offer stimulating input and prompts for participants as they think about creating their own artworks. 10:30 a.m.: Coffee and Mingle Refreshments and time for social interaction will take place in Museum venues that take full advantage of the beautiful oceanside location and views. 11 a.m.: Art-Making Activity The hands-on workshop will provide a forum for self-expression and developing new interpersonal connections. Weekly Program: Session 1: Create a non-traditional self-portrait For this project, the figure’s back will be facing the viewer, relying on a silhouette and its surroundings rather than a face. We will draw inspiration from Tidawhitney Lek’s The Intersection (2023), which offers an intersection of two worlds, Cambodia and California; Shizu Saldamando’s Joe at the Venice Room (2020); and John Valadez’s Car Show (2001), which highlights the relatable qualities of everyday people. Session 2: Create a portrait in the style of an album cover Explore alter egos! Consider the presentation of self through Mario Ayala’s Rancho Cucamonga (2022) and its trompe-l'oeil realism and Gillian Wearing’s Wallpaper (2015), where she transforms herself into multiple personas. Session 3: Create a transformative portrait of a friend or family member In this session, enter an uncanny world in La Marcha de las Langostas (1998) by Daniela Gallois and her whimsical, dreamlike creatures. Additionally, we will examine two of Joey Terrill’s works – Jeff, Victor, Luiz and George (1992–1993), which highlights a hyper-realistic portrayal of his friends, and Still Life with Zerit (2000), which uses autobiographical objects to share aspects of his identity. Session 4: Representations of the human form stylized in different ways We will take inspiration from Beverly Buchanan’s Medicine Woman (1993) and analyze the many pieces that create the whole in her assemblage artwork. We will also take inspiration from Lynn Hershman Leeson’s X-Ray Woman in Bathing Cap (1996), a simultaneous portrayal of the internal and external female form.  Funders Reflections is generously supported by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy. Visit: MCASD MCASD on Instagram and Facebook
