Low VOC is an exhibition of prototypes created by artists and designers from the San Diego and Tijuana regions made primarily with engineered wood composite panels referred to as Naturally Bonded Boards (NB boards). NB boards are non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable, made from sawdust and post-industrial/ post-consumer and recycled fibers without added formaldehyde. These boards were developed during a collaborative effort between Research Mechanical Engineer John F. Hunt (now retired), of the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory and artist/designer Christine Lee. Between 2010 and 2014, a variety of NB boards was created through multiple rounds of board forming were made. Curator Christine Lee invited other artists/designers to experiment with not only how they could apply end-user applications to this material, but also to consider how the types of adhesives and finishes that would be applied could have a positive or negative impact. We are proud to announce the seventh San Diego Latinx New Play Festival will take place at La Jolla Playhouse, October 4 – 6, 2024. The Latinx New Play Festival expands the presence of Latinx stories and artists on the American stage, and spotlights the broad range of today’s Latinx experience. Four scripts will be selected to be rehearsed and developed at the Playhouse, culminating in a live public reading at the festival. The festival will be free for everyone to attend, and will include a schedule of in-person readings of new works, panel discussions and other events. Produced by Dr. Maria Patrice Amon, the Playhouse’s 2024/25 Artist-in-Residence, in partnership with La Jolla Playhouse, the Latinx New Play Festival was originally launched in 2016 by San Diego Repertory Theatre. La Jolla Playhouse is delighted to be able to provide this vibrant, important arts event a new home in San Diego. Join Quint Gallery this Saturday morning from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. to celebrate our summer shows in La Jolla, including an array of recent sculptures and early drawings by Kenneth Capps, prints by Don Hughes and a new work by Bread & Salt's resident artist Brandon Secrest at 7655 Girard Avenue. Nancy Blum: Gathered is on view at 7722 Girard Avenue. Kenneth Capps received his MFA at the University of California, San Diego in 1975, during which his work was acquired by the Storm King Art Center in upstate New York. His work is now featured in permanent collections internationally, including the the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the Port of San Diego, Bayside Park in Chula Vista, CA; the Palm Springs Art Museum; the Oakland Museum Of California; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Alfred Schmela Sculpture Park in Dusseldorf, Germany, among many others. Capps has received several grants and awards, including The Engelhard Award, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and two Pollock/Krasner foundation grants. Many of his sculptures are sited on a 40-acre sculpture park built by the artist in Warner Springs, CA. -- Nancy Blum received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has since become a widely sought-after visiting artist, critic, and lecturer at universities nationwide. Her work has also been recognized through fellowships from the Pollock‐Krasner Foundation, Peter S. Reed Foundation, Mid‐Atlantic Arts Foundation, and New York’s Lower East Side Printshop. The first monograph of her work was published in 2017 and features essays, interviews and documentation of her drawing, sculpture, and public artworks. Nancy lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Monday, February 17 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Ages 13+yrs welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your teen will explore handmaking and traditional craft through a variety of mediums such as tiny ceramic wheel throwing, lino carving unique stamps and then block printing! Along the way, we’ll make fun, creative, high-quality crafts teens can take home. Our projects are geared to build and hone skills, creativity + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the teen’s age and ability. It’s important that your teen bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty. In addition, if your teen is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk them from their camp to the studio. If you’d like your teen to stay during the lunch hour from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m., for a fun, supervised space to eat their lunch (not provided) and a craft afterward, visit Lunch Supervision. The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. We close out this year's series with Adrienne Nims, who will take us on a musical journey with lush harmonies, mystical melodies, and global rhythms. Adrienne Nims’ passionate energy and dazzling musicianship are well acclaimed; As featured solo artist, or with her talented band, Spirit Wind, Adrienne creates an unforgettable and inspiring entertainment experience. Adrienne’s dynamic, sensual voice on the saxophones, flues, and many more global indigenous instruments express not only a vast array of musical culture and style, but also the magic and mystery of Life! Spirit Wind, Adrienne’s own band, feature Adrienne on soprano, alto, and tenor saxes, as well as many different flutes, including traditional western, Native American, Indian, African, and Asian flutes, performing contemporary jazz and global music throughout the United States and internationally. Ben Redlawsk is a media production specialist for KPBS radio. He provides technical direction for KPBS “Morning Edition” and assists with “KPBS Midday Edition” and “KPBS Roundtable” through audio editing and recording. He got his start in radio as head audio engineer at KSDT, UC San Diego’s student-run radio station. Ben graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary computing and the arts with an emphasis in music technology.
