"Beyond the Border, en Plein Air" takes visitors on a visual journey starting from the public parks, regional and national parks, into neighborhoods, past historical sites of architectural marvel, along the bay, and the serene Pacific shoreline. The journey concludes with a tranquil finale at the dock, leaving a lasting impression of the journey's diverse landscapes. This journey, much like the artistic process, is a transformative one where each step reveals new perspectives and insights. The exhibition offers a space where plein air artists share their unique interpretations of the world around them. Each painting is the artist's experience, inviting viewers to pause and reflect. The time and consideration given by each artist enriches the public's understanding of the artistic journey, making the exhibition a shared experience of discovery and appreciation. Widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation, the Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter-composer has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. For the past three decades, he’s toured as a pop artist, while also performing with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras. A New York Times Best Selling author and podcast host, Ben also composes for film, tv and theatre, guest stars in films and TV, and serves as the Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. A longtime advocate for arts and music education funding, Ben launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys For Kids,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that provide free or affordable music lessons to interested school-age children. VOICES ON THE INSIDE Workshop with Poetic Justice FREE + ALL AGES Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Poetic Justice is a local nonprofit that provides poetry and art as tools for addressing the root causes of trauma for people in women’s jails and prisons. Please join us for a special workshop at Verbatim Books on Monday, July 22nd, at 6:30 p.m. The Voices on the Inside workshop takes the contents of the current multimodal exhibit at the San Diego Central Public Library to a deeper level with a more hands-on approach to poetry, portraiture, and visual literacy. Attendees will engage in Visual Thinking Strategies protocol, direct and/or create their own portrait, and engage each other in conversations connected to the visual nature of our current society, and the overwhelming power of social media and other outlets, for advocacy efforts in a visual context around some pressing systemic and social justice issues. Participants will engage with artifacts from the larger exhibit with special attention to the artistic choices made by the women featured in the exhibit, followed by a larger conversation on the power of visual and multimodal artifacts as tools for healing and advocacy. Poetic Justice merch and poetry anthologies will be available with a donation to the organization.
