Originating in underground Black and gay clubs, disco unseated rock as America’s most popular music by the late 1970s. But many diehard rock fans viewed disco as shallow and superficial. The hostility came to a head on July 12, 1979, when a riot broke out at “Disco Demolition Night” at a baseball game in Chicago.

Two Rooms Gallery, a new art space in Bird Rock/La Jolla area, opens its next exhibition, "Without Love in the Dream It'll Never Come True," featuring the work of Becca Ford and Tessie Salcido Whitmore. Both Ford and Sacido Whitmore make sculptural, mixed-media works. Salcido Whitmore has a series of found-object assemblages, and Ford's contributions include some of her "portal" works. But this weekend is not just for the art connoisseur—the LJAWF is also where wine enthusiasts, craft beer and spirit lovers unite. Festival visitors who are twenty-one and older can sample delectable wines from Valle De Guadalupe, California, Italy, and France, and taste a wide variety of internationally renowned brews and spirits by several local San Diego craft breweries and distilleries in the Wine & Beer Garden. Located in the center of the festival, it boasts more than 13,000 square feet with ample seating, shade, and room to dance! This year’s Wine & Beer Garden is a ticketed event and runs from Noon-6 p.m. with last pour at 5:30 p.m. The Geppetto’s Family Art Center is a FREE family area that features fun, hands-on crafts and interactive art, as well as science experiments, 3-D printing, and an opportunity to contribute to a public space art project. All profits raised benefit underfunded programs such as art, music, science, physical education, technology, and on-site medical care at La Jolla’s five public schools. Since its inception, the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival has donated more than $1,000,000 to these schools for the educational benefit of more than 4,000 children. From the gallery: Wendell Kling transforms the Athenaeum's gallery and windows with light, color, and cut paper silhouetted imagery to create a peaceful, contemplative retreat. Taking inspiration from temples of various belief systems, A Coruscating Sanctuary provides a platform for the activities that take place within. Kineto-luminescent furnishings and lights orient participants to the central “altar” and matching lectern. Here, the sanctuary invites visitors to participate in quiet reflection, readings, and occasional activations in the exchange of philosophies through poetry, sound, movement, and performance. Wendell M. Kling is a Southern California based interdisciplinary artist and educator. Kling's work is grounded in contemporary interdisciplinary practice that often incorporates sculptural objects with two-dimensional media, installation, performance, and film. The artist received a BA and MFA in studio art from UCSD in 1989 and 2000 respectively and has exhibited locally and nationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Ship in the Woods, Bread & Salt, Art Basel Miami (2005), Thrust Projects in New York, and MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles. Kling is currently professor of sculpture and new genres at San Diego Mesa College.
