  • No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! This 2-part workshop is designed to teach students the basics of woodworking with hand tools. Students will construct a wooden plant stand using half-lap, dowels, and notched joinery. Students learn how to safely use chisels and a mallet, along with other hand tools such as a hand saw, card scraper, block planes, and spokeshaves. We will show sharpening techniques for chisels and how to apply finish to the plant stand. Materials will be provided.   • This class is taught by women to empower women & non-gender conforming individuals in the woodshop. We cover the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on the chop saw, including miters, angled cuts, and how to properly cut joinery for them. Other machines will be introduced as well such as the router, biscuit jointer, and drill press. We’ll show you how to properly sand, and finish your piece with an easy, non-toxic, traditional finish.   • This workshop teaches the basics in Stained Glass. No previous glass experience is needed. During the workshop, students will complete a small project using glass they select from a variety of colors and textures. Different patterns are available to choose from. Students will learn how to handle glass, cut and grind glass, apply copper foil, and solder pieces together. Glass is included in the class price and all tools are supplied. Material fee: $10 payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop. No experience necessary. Next, a San Diego nonprofit that helps support young people who’ve aged out of the foster care system is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Then, the state is requiring residents and businesses to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to the landfill. We have more details on San Diego’s new organics recycling program. And, a story about how raising the height of the Shasta Dam in Northern California would impact the sacred land of the Indigenous Winnemem Wintu people. Finally, a profile of San Diego artist, Andrea Overturf who has a career as a symphony musician and also creates multi-media sculptures from items from the swap meet that many would dismiss as junk.
