  • Aloha! My name is Anh Pham, founder of a sustainable surfboard company called Earth Fan Surf. We are excited to host the first annual *Paepo'o Classic* surf competition, featuring eco-friendly, all-wood bodyboards and surfboards. Our goal is to raise awareness about the impact of cheap foam bodyboards that break and pollute our beaches, posing a significant threat to wildlife and marine ecosystems here in San Diego. This contest invites surfers to reconnect with the global roots of surfing by competing on traditional wooden boards in a classic Hawaiian-style surf competition. We will provide over 20 traditional Hawaiian-style Paepo'o bodyboards for contestants, thousands of dollars in prize money, and the prestigious title of *Earth Fan Paepo'o Classic Champion* for both Men's and Women's categories. Additionally, there will be an exciting Bodysurfing Shootout contest all to benefit the non-profit animal rescue group, SurfersForStrays.org! We hope you will help us spread the word and join us for this free charity surf contest highlighting a healthy Mother Ocean! • It’s good news for California’s water supply. There are 64 feet of snow in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, which will eventually melt into the state’s rivers and reservoirs. In other news, the condition of San Diego's streets is getting worse, and as the cost of road maintenance keeps going up, some advocates are asking for a new approach. Plus, students from San Diego's underserved mid-city neighborhoods are using performing arts to improve their mental health and self-confidence.
  • In New York, a young group of community organizers recently pulled together a week-long celebration of Mexican restaurants. They stress it's about the workers as much as the food.

  • Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Bodhi Day and… National Violin Day?? This is a season of so many reasons to celebrate, with music from Arlo (Guthrie) to Zavateri: holiday classics old and new! The Hutchins Consort plays on the eight scaled violins designed and built by luthier Dr. Carleen Hutchins, whose research into the acoustic properties of string instruments resulted in an innovative process called free-plate tuning; a precise method of refining the top and back plates of a violin before it is assembled to bring it to peak acoustic performance. The fruits of her labor are the eight Hutchins violins, ranging in size from the 18.5-inch treble to the 7.2-foot contrabass. Like all violins, these instruments capture the emotional element of the music. But they have the additional advantage of being crafted as a complete set with the same harmonic DNA giving them the ability to produce a unique array of sounds that add a new dimension to the works they perform.
