Marcy Sculpture Garden Great for artists of all ages, the Art Alive Garden of Activities brings hands-on fun to the floral extravaganza of Art Alive weekend. Join Museum educators in the floral-themed art-making space to experiment and explore through a variety of hands-on arts projects and demonstrations. The 2024 Garden of Activities will again be outdoors to serve more youth and families. Experiment with a new skill by choosing to partake in individual or collaborative activities. The Garden of Activities guided projects are inspired by the art of India and the special Art Alive installation from the Museum’s renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of South Asian paintings. Special to the Art Alive 2024 Garden of Activities and as part of our celebration of the art of India, guided rangoli art making with guest instructors from DOTURMINDS (Dot Your Minds) will be a featured activity. Rangoli is an ancient Indian art form of multi-colored sand used to create floor decorations symbolizing wealth, joy, and prosperity, as well as thanksgiving to deities. DOTURMINDS (Dot Your Minds) instructors will guide participants through a hands-on activity creating tabletop rangoli art using printed patterns and bottles of colored sand to create personal rangoli art. Once completed, attendees will be asked to brush off the art and take the experience of creating the rangoli with you while learning the art of letting go. Free with Art Alive admission. This year's unmissable jazz releases came in two flavors: breakthrough releases by driven young newcomers, and a heap of unearthed treasures from the vault.

From the organizers: San Diego Dance Theater annually seeks newly emerging dancemakers to participate in the Emerging Choreographers Showcase & Awards, a competition that awards three prizes to participants: Best Overall Choreography, Best Dancer, and Audience Favorite. This exhilarating show is a beloved staple in San Diego, with its main purpose being to bring exposure and support to growing choreographers in the community. In 2023, we removed the age requirements to include dancemakers who emerge at any age in life. Read about the 2024 finalists here. About the showcase and awards: San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to present the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase & Awards! The event formerly known as Young Choreographer's Showcase & Prize has evolved to reflect the agelessness of dance and support the pursuit of growth at any point in life. There is no longer a maximum age limit for eligibility, and we hope to see even more incredible dancing and dance-making! Finalists will compete for three prizes, as voted on by YOU, the audience, and the panel of judges. Grand prize is $1000 and a night in Live Arts Fest 2024 awarded to "Best Overall." "Best Dancer" and "Audience Favorite" both receive a $500 prize, with "Best Dancer" also receiving an invitation to dance at a future SDDT event. In 1942, the United States incarcerated over 125,000 Japanese Americans in concentration camps during WW2—including 1150 from San Diego. AjA’s Civil Liberties Project aims to remember this history through art while drawing parallels to the injustices happening today. Come view this art exhibit at Ocean View Growing Grounds, commemorating the erased history of San Diego’s Japanese American communities and its ties to the current humanitarian crises happening locally and internationally.
