After 50 Years, the City of San Diego is set to begin construction on Beyer Park in San Ysidro.

The USD College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities Center, along with Warwick’s bookstore, will host best-selling author Amy Tan as she discusses her new book, The Backyard Bird Chronicles. She will be in conversation with Noelle Norton, PhD, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences. Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time through daily entries, thoughtful questions, and beautiful original sketches. With boundless charm and wit, author Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world. Amy Tan is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels, including The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Her essays and stories have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper’s Bazaar, National Geographic, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. She is a co-producer and co-screenwriter of the film version of The Joy Luck Club and is on the board of American Bird Conservancy. She is the recipient of many honors, including the Commonwealth Gold Award, the Carl Sandburg Award. Join us for Voices on the Inside at the SDPL, a self-portrait photography and poetry exhibit by incarcerated members of Poetic Justice. Voices on the Inside unites our community with a multi-modal art exhibition, free to the public, rooted in the urgent need for a collaborative solution to amending punitive approaches to incarceration and increasing rehabilitation and healing. This exhibition offers an innovative and constructive approach to transforming prisons and jails by acknowledging and listening to those who are surviving incarceration. By bringing together communities for the purpose of dialogue, bridging differences, healing from harm together, and witnessing the humanity behind each individual, Poetic Justice hopes to make real change in the lives of incarcerated women. Poetic Justice is a community within and beyond women's prisons and jails, working alongside one another with a shared belief in the power of self-expression to change lives. Voices on the Inside, funded by the NEA, the World Design Capital and the California Arts Council, is a Poetic Justice photography and poetry program in collaboration with photographer Lisa Loftus that brings together incarcerated members of our community from California, Oklahoma, and Tijuana. The San Diego History Center in Balboa Park presents "Aloha Vaqueros," an exhibition that delves into the fascinating and rarely-told cultural fusion between San Diego, California and Mexico's vaqueros (cowboys), and Hawaii’s paniolos, or "Hawaiian cowboys." This exhibit uncovers the shared history of these regions, showcasing the influence of vaquero traditions on modern ranching practices and cultural celebrations in San Diego, Mexico, and Hawaii. The exhibit highlights the intertwined heritage of vaqueros and paniolos and their lasting impact on the way land and livestock are cared for, emphasizing how these traditions have helped shape these regions’ identities. 'Aloha Vaqueros' Exhibit Opening RSVP Historical Highlights: One of the exhibit's key stories centers on Joaquín Armas, a vaquero and soldier born at Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Armas gained recognition for his skills in cattle handling during the 19th century. His expertise caught the attention of King Kamehameha III of Hawaii, who, in the 1830s, invited Armas to advise him on managing the islands' expanding cattle population. This cattle population had originated from a gift given by Captain George Vancouver to King Kamehameha I in 1793. Armas recruited three additional vaqueros from San Diego to accompany him, bringing vaquero traditions to Hawaii—traditions that continue to be celebrated today. Exhibit Features: The "San Diego Aloha Vaqueros" exhibit showcases unique artifacts, historical documents, and interactive multimedia displays and will be open to the public from Oct. 17, 2024, through May 2025. The original exhibit was created by the Museo del Vaquero de las Californias (MUVACA), located in El Triunfo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and is dedicated to preserving vaquero culture in the Californias. The Aloha Vaqueros exhibition at MUVACA was made possible by the support of Ándale La Paz, A.C., the Alumbra Innovations Foundation, and the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana. San Diego History Center: Founded in 1928, the San Diego History Center is committed to creating a healthy, vibrant, and inclusive community by connecting people with the region’s past, present, and future. “Sounds and Swells” Presented by the Art of Elan and the Hausmann Quartet Join us for the return of Sounds and Swells! As part of the San Diego Central Library's new "Cinema + Sound Series," this collaboration between the Hausmann Quartet and Art of Elan features live music by Claude Debussy, Terry Riley, Franz Joseph Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, and Franz Schubert accompanying local surfing footage from McCracken Films and Joey Taylor Photography. This concert is free and open to the public. The CINEMA + SOUND SERIES is a new series that combines two of Central Library's signature programs: The Concert Series and Picture This! Film Series. The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) is in full bloom this spring, with floral designers interpreting works of art from the Museum’s collection into vibrant floral displays from April 25–April 28, 2024. Art Alive is the Museum’s signature annual fundraiser, providing critical year-round support for exhibitions, education, and outreach programs in the community. The signature celebration brings a kaleidoscope of nearly 100 colorful floral arrangements inspired by works of art on view at SDMA. The theme for this year’s Art Alive celebrates Indian art and culture, and the event will include a special installation from the Museum’s renowned Edwin Binney 3rd collection of South Asian paintings. Complementing the exhibition, Art Alive 2024 features a highly talented selection of Indian keynote artists, including Nisha K. Sethi, Vani Shiroor, and Meghaa Modi. Nisha Sethi is a talented typography artist whose works will be displayed at Art Alive’s kick-off party, Bloom Bash. Vani Shiroor is founder of DOTURMINDS, a local art and mindfulness group that aims to help people gain clarity, confidence and purpose through rangoli, an ancient Indian art form that uses multi-colored sand to create floor decorations symbolizing wealth, joy and prosperity, as well as thanksgiving to deities. Meghaa Modi, the Museum’s first international rotunda designer and India’s premier wedding and concept floral designer, is traveling from Bangalore, India, to fill the Museum’s two-story rotunda with a vibrant, large-scale floral installation. Guests will relish her multi-sensory design that celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of India, centered around the revered bovine figure of the goddess Kamadhenu, described in Hinduism as the wish-granting mother of all cows. Bloom Bash also returns this year, offering immersive art installations, live performances, custom henna applications from Henna San Diego, sweet and savory bites from more than 30 top eateries, including local Indian restaurants, and signature cocktails, craft beer and upscale wines. The 21+ party also features a Ferris wheel in the Plaza de Panama outside the Museum, plus live performances from Indian drummers, dancers, and a DJ. The 2024 Art Alive floral exhibition will be on display to the public Friday, April 26, from noon to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28. General admission is complimentary for members, $40 for nonmembers, $5 for guests aged 7-17, and free for children under six. Timed tickets are required, and entry is anytime within the designated hours. Guests can enjoy Art Alive at their own pace; exit is not timed. Bloom Bash and Premiere Dinner tickets are sold separately.
