Join us for Voices on the Inside at the SDPL, a self-portrait photography and poetry exhibit by incarcerated members of Poetic Justice. Voices on the Inside unites our community with a multi-modal art exhibition, free to the public, rooted in the urgent need for a collaborative solution to amending punitive approaches to incarceration and increasing rehabilitation and healing. This exhibition offers an innovative and constructive approach to transforming prisons and jails by acknowledging and listening to those who are surviving incarceration. By bringing together communities for the purpose of dialogue, bridging differences, healing from harm together, and witnessing the humanity behind each individual, Poetic Justice hopes to make real change in the lives of incarcerated women. Poetic Justice is a community within and beyond women's prisons and jails, working alongside one another with a shared belief in the power of self-expression to change lives. Voices on the Inside, funded by the NEA, the World Design Capital and the California Arts Council, is a Poetic Justice photography and poetry program in collaboration with photographer Lisa Loftus that brings together incarcerated members of our community from California, Oklahoma, and Tijuana. On view at the downtown San Diego Central Library's Popular Library Fairway, April 29 through July 31, 2024. The USD College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities Center, along with Warwick’s bookstore, will host best-selling author Amy Tan as she discusses her new book, The Backyard Bird Chronicles. She will be in conversation with Noelle Norton, PhD, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences. Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time through daily entries, thoughtful questions, and beautiful original sketches. With boundless charm and wit, author Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world. Amy Tan is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels, including The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Her essays and stories have appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper’s Bazaar, National Geographic, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. She is a co-producer and co-screenwriter of the film version of The Joy Luck Club and is on the board of American Bird Conservancy. She is the recipient of many honors, including the Commonwealth Gold Award, the Carl Sandburg Award. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in 2022, and in 2023, President Biden presented her with the National Humanities Medal.
