Basquiat was and is still considered a ground-breaking artist in the neo-expressionism art movement. A young black artist, his artwork dealt with themes of racism, classism, colonialism, and other power structures and their effects on U.S. society.

Join us for Voices on the Inside at the SDPL, a self-portrait photography and poetry exhibit by incarcerated members of Poetic Justice. Voices on the Inside unites our community with a multi-modal art exhibition, free to the public, rooted in the urgent need for a collaborative solution to amending punitive approaches to incarceration and increasing rehabilitation and healing. This exhibition offers an innovative and constructive approach to transforming prisons and jails by acknowledging and listening to those who are surviving incarceration. By bringing together communities for the purpose of dialogue, bridging differences, healing from harm together, and witnessing the humanity behind each individual, Poetic Justice hopes to make real change in the lives of incarcerated women. Poetic Justice is a community within and beyond women's prisons and jails, working alongside one another with a shared belief in the power of self-expression to change lives. Voices on the Inside, funded by the NEA, the World Design Capital and the California Arts Council, is a Poetic Justice photography and poetry program in collaboration with photographer Lisa Loftus that brings together incarcerated members of our community from California, Oklahoma, and Tijuana. Lucas Smith, an artist and resident of Mission Valley, San Diego, California, is making his solo exhibition debut with “Minimal Designs & Organic Shapes” at Gallery 21, Spanish Village Art Center in April. Relocating from the Midwest in 2021, Lucas brings a fresh vision to abstractionism inspired by exploration of America’s Finest City. This contemporary artist is not afraid to use color and showcase his personality through his imagination and creativity. Smith’s palette choices are bold & vibrant. His artwork is a series of layers, each with their own unique significance. Lucas invites his viewers in, not holding back, taking them on a journey through is artwork. Each piece tells a story and seeks to engage with the viewer not only to inspire but to soothe the mind. Lucas is an award-winning artist with work juried into galleries across San Diego County the past year including, Gallery 21 at Spanish Village Art Center, Ashton Art Gallery, San Diego Watercolor Society, North Coastal Art Gallery, Covet Gallery, and OMA Art Alliance. He is also a resident artist in Studio 12 at Ashton Art Gallery at Art on 30th. This week of Summer Camp is all about book making & papercraft! In this 1-week camp, kids and teens will learn to make handmade paper, create an origami book, and diy zines, and beyond! Exploration + imagination meets hands-on crafting as campers push the bounds of this flexible medium to its limits. Students make fun projects to take home. This camp is recommended for children 11 years and up. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child or teen transferred, let us know! If you’d like your child or teen to stay during the lunch hour, there’s a $25 fee for the week to cover the lunchtime gap. They can bring a lunch and have lunch with us with the option to do a fun craft after lunch, or head out to grab a lunch and head back to the studio to eat in a safe, welcoming space.
