A volunteer curator in Philadelphia puts on art exhibits to raise awareness of lives lost to gun violence.

"Espacios & Lines," a temporary art exhibition that showcases the culture of our shared binational region of 7.1 million people as it explores the border of art and design. "Espacios & Lines" features the work of 16 local artists, half of whom work binational, five who fully reside in Baja California. Their work addresses the region’s shared symbolism, unseen vantage points, reimagined lines, design as a necessity, design as reconstruction and more. This exhibit follows the World Design Organization’s (WDO) joint designation of San Diego and Tijuana as the World Design Capital 2024 (WDC). As the first binational selection in WDO history, this designation for San Diego and Tijuana is pioneering and brings a global spotlight to our region. Welcome To The 13th Annual San Diego Arab Film Festival! April 12 & 13 and 19 - 21, 2024 The San Diego Arab Film Festival is back for 2024 with live, in-person presentations of feature length and short films at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art. The festival will open on Friday, April 12, and present 8 screenings, each showcasing one feature film and one short film, from across the Arab World. Each evening, the festival will also offer cafeteria-style Arabic dinner. We are excited to bring these films to the San Diego community! Tickets are on sale now, with individual screenings at $15 (discounted to $12 for students), 3-ticket packages for $40 and passes for all 8 screenings for $80. The biggest event in classical music returns to San Diego, June 20-29. The Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival, led by Maestro Michael Francis, is the largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players from the nation’s top orchestras, who come together in San Diego every summer to form one remarkable orchestra for a limited six-concert series. This year, the orchestra will return to two La Jolla venues where it first held performances in 2023: the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater and The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. About the exhibit: Featuring artwork by Alexa Vasquez, this exhibition will highlight the experiences of undocumented queer immigrants that migrated to the U.S. as children and came of age in the country. As undocumented queer immigrants, they experience a double marginalization in which they must navigate both xenophobic and homophobic violence. Their queer identities marginalize them within undocumented immigrant communities, who frequently hold homophobic beliefs. Similarly, their undocumented status excludes them from many queer communities, who are often opposed to undocumented immigration despite their otherwise liberal politics. Consequently, undocumented queer immigrants cautiously and strategically choose how and when to be out about their sexuality and/or immigration status. While this double marginality undoubtedly positions undocumented queer immigrants as one of the most vulnerable communities within the immigrant population in the U.S. and the country writ large, many undocumented queer artists are also using their lived experiences to politically empower their communities. Read more from curator M. Lilliana Ramirez and the artists here. About the artist: Alexa Vasquez is a trans woman of color and child migrant from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in painting, writing, and fashion. Her work is autobiographical, poetic and political and her visual artworks are inspired by Oaxaca, by the experience of a migrant longing to make it back home. Her writings are memories of growing up in an immigrant household, leaving home, transitioning, and exploring trans womanhood.
