"Shirin Towfiq: Threaded Journeys" On view: March 30 - Aug 11, 2024 Curated By: Guusje Sanders Interdisciplinary artist Shirin Towfiq explores the stories and memories shared by her family while navigating the in-betweenness and uncertainty she feels as a second-generation Iranian refugee. Her work is inspired by Persian folk art, lore, and traditions which she reimagines through embroidery, patchwork, and digital prints on gauze. Folk art and craft are deeply rooted in traditions frequently passed down through generations. Steeped in cultural heritage, the techniques and skills are a living record of the past and ways to share stories today. They are intimately bound to the home and daily life. Many communities that are dispersed around the globe have strong ties to their cultural, ethnic, and national roots. Through folk art and craft and its connection to the home, people are able to go beyond geographical boundaries and create a sense of comfort and belonging. In the exhibition, "Shirin Towfiq: Threaded Journeys," Towfiq weaves connections between the Persian folklore of the magic carpet and its ability to transport people with incredible speed to her experience as a second-generation Iranian refugee. She embeds her magic carpet with references to home and belonging; freedom and the feeling of being uprooted; and the intricacies of identities constructed around these journeys. Welcome To The 13th Annual San Diego Arab Film Festival! April 12 & 13 and 19 - 21, 2024 The San Diego Arab Film Festival is back for 2024 with live, in-person presentations of feature length and short films at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art. The festival will open on Friday, April 12, and present 8 screenings, each showcasing one feature film and one short film, from across the Arab World. Each evening, the festival will also offer cafeteria-style Arabic dinner. We are excited to bring these films to the San Diego community! Tickets are on sale now, with individual screenings at $15 (discounted to $12 for students), 3-ticket packages for $40 and passes for all 8 screenings for $80. Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, March 9th. About the Artists: Anna Casser (1943- ) Born in Verona, Italy, Anna Caser was educated at the Fine Arts School in Genoa, Italy. Her works can be seen in Italy, Europe, UAE, USA and Canada at important private and public collections. Inspired by Paul Klee, Caser covers her canvasses in loose washes of intense color on a ground of Venetian plaster made from marble dust obtained from local Italian quarries. Over these abstractions, Caser inscribes sketchy playful drawings through the paint and stucco. Willy Heeks, born in 1951, has gained a national reputation, exhibiting in New York, Los Angeles, and throughout the United States. He received his BFA from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston in 1973, attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program that same year and in 1977 he received his MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. His work has been acquired by the Peabody-in-Essex Museum (Salem, MA), Museum of Contemporary Art, (Detroit, MI), and the Cleveland Museum of Art (Cleveland, OH). His work is also in the collections of the Portland Art Museum (Portland, OR), Brooklyn Museum of Art (New York, NY), Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY) and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA).
