Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basketweaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary. Folk singer and composer, Peter Mayer, will be performing at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito on January 21, 2023 at 7:00pm. Performing in venues across the U.S, and beyond, he has been working full-time for over 20 years. He writes songs for a small planet to celebrate life on earth and the mysterious and wondrous fact of our existence. He also writes whimsical songs about dress hats, pumpkins, pajamas, love and freight trains. His music has been widely performed by other artists as well. Jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd performs with his Ocean Trio, filled out by guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton. Bassist Larry Grenadier will be joins as a special guest. Lloyd is widely revered as one of the greatest living jazz artists, having played the world’s leading festivals and stages throughout a remarkable seven-decade career. The concert will not be held at the Athenaeum, but will take place at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Auditorium in Sorrento Mesa.
