  • Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basketweaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.   • Jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd performs with his Ocean Trio, filled out by guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton. Bassist Larry Grenadier will be joins as a special guest. Lloyd is widely revered as one of the greatest living jazz artists, having played the world’s leading festivals and stages throughout a remarkable seven-decade career. The concert will not be held at the Athenaeum, but will take place at the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Auditorium in Sorrento Mesa. This month-long series is full of hands-on, hand building work in clay. Students will create functional and nonfunctional ceramic art. Learn how to create with coils, slab construction and clay pinching methods. See the beauty of the final results as your pieces come out of the kiln.
