Drawing is Seeing An unusual shaped tree, a turn in the creek, a mountain view can wake us up on a trail. Once we have taken a photograph, within minutes, we are back on cruise control, thinking about the rest of the day, or the lunch we packed. The view is lost. The feeling of connection to the tree is lost. The patterns we saw in the creek are gone. What did we really see? How do we reconnect to our attention? Drawing, connecting your hand in motion to your eye and brain, is a way to keep attention. When we do this, we wake up to the world of detail, delight and complexity that is always there if we chose to see it. Drawing is a skill, like reading, that can be learned. This 3 hour class intends to teach you the skills to draw what you see in nature. The purpose of the class is not to create art, but to give you tools to see more clearly and to remember in more detail the world that is around you, a world that is always ready for your attention and curiosity. San Diego singer/songwriter Sara Petite returns to the Kensington Club on Friday September 20th with her “Americana Roundup” show. Sara Petite, a 10 time San Diego Music Award winner and prolific singer/songwriter with 7 released albums, hosts “Sara Petite’s Americana Roundup” - an evening of music, mirth and merriment. Showcasing Sara’s band and including a number of guest singers and performers from the San Diego area, this evening promises a special treat by featuring renowned singer/songwriter John Eddie. John Eddie is a skilled vocalist, composer, and energetic live act, who has also ventured into writing and producing for movies and television (Agent Elvis, Netflix). Eddie has gained a loyal audience with his captivating live shows and sincere lyrics that are filled with honest, real-life experiences, clever humor, and reflections on life, love, and everything in between. After his debut album on Lost Highway, Who the Hell is John Eddie?, Eddie relocated to Nashville, where his music was recognized and recorded by notable artists such as Brantley Gilbert, Keith Urban, Kid Rock, and Sammy Hagar. As a traveling musician, Eddie has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen, Miranda Lambert, Bob Seger, John Mayer, and many more. Digital works were on display this weekend in downtown San Diego, showing what it's like to see the world in adolescence. ‘Voice Out’ highlights young artists with ties on both sides of the border.

François Boucher: "Between Fact & Fantasy" Guest Speaker: Richard Rand, Associate Director of Collections, J. Paul Getty Museum The Timken Museum of Art's Lovers in a Park (1758) epitomizes the art of François Boucher, one of the most prolific and successful artists in eighteenth-century France. But what does the painting actually represent, and what would viewers at the time have made of it? Join Richard Rand for a fascinating evening exploring the complexities and contradictions of one of the Timken's most compelling works of art, painted at a key moment in European history. Richard Rand is the Associate Director for Collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Previously, he served as the Robert and Martha Berman Lipp Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. He is also a lecturer in art history in the Williams College/Clark Graduate Program in the History of Art. He has held curatorial appointments at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1989-1992) and the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College (1992-1997). This lecture and reception is taking place in conjunction with the Timken's extensive onsite conservation of François Boucher's Lovers in a Park - the Museum's first interactive conservation in public view.
