The Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House is thrilled to announce the new exhibit, “A Splendid Decennium: Victorian to Vanguard.” The exhibit will infuse the House with works from internationally-acclaimed fiber artist Marty Ornish, exploring a decade of political, environmental, and feminist perspectives through textile art. “A Splendid Decennium: Victorian to Vanguard” is a retrospective exhibit in two parts, uniting two historical jewels, the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House and the Villa Montezuma Museum. The exhibition will span both properties and can be viewed separately, but guests are encouraged to visit both for a comprehensive experience of MartyO’s work. Every thread weaves a form of art, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. - anonymous In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May 2024, the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center (BMCC) will showcase traditional attire representing more than a dozen countries and ethnic communities of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Through the exhibition, visitors will explore AAPI culture, customs, and traditions through historical and contemporary fashion and family stories. The exhibit connects and celebrates our cultural communities through performances, fashion, food and events during May. An opening reception on Saturday, May 4 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. will highlight savory and sweet tastings made by local chefs who specialize in Asian Pacific cuisine. Featured dishes include Korean gimbap, Thai spring rolls from Takhrai Thai Restaurant, as well as a refreshing Filipino pandan young coconut dessert. A Chinese Dragon dance as well as Thai and Philippine dance performances highlight the opening of this original exhibition featuring local South Bay San Diego residents. Student fashion designers are invited to attend a special appearance by former Project Runway contestant and renowned designer Kenneth Barlis on Thursday, May 9, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During this intimate meeting, Barlis will share his journey as a creative force in the fashion industry and provide insights to his inspiration through a fashion show featuring a sampling of his designs. Exploring Mexico's Contemporary Classical Flute & Piano Music Flutist, Julia Barnett, & Pianist, Kathryn Lieppman present a recital of Music of the 20th/21st centuries written by Mexican Composers on Saturday, Sept. 28th, 4pm, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 700 D Ave, Coronado, CA 92118 This program will feature Bichito by Diana Syrse for Piccolo and Piano, Leonardo Coral's "Sonata No Tan Breve," Samuel Zyman's Concerto No. 1, and Eduardo Angulo's "Sonata for Flute and Piano." Admission to the concert is free. However, a free will offering will be taken to support the artists. Ms. Lieppman and Dr. Barnett met while studying music at the esteemed Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and have continued their collaborations throughout the years. The program was inspired by Dr. Barnett's research for her Dissertation, "Performing Practice for Roberto Peña’s Concierto Para Flauta y Orquesta," as well as her collaborations with composer Samuel Zyman. This concert showcases the rich and vibrant flute music of Mexico, and will be the first of many performances focusing on Mexican and Latin American music, culminating in a professional CD showcasing the many gems from south of the border.
