Illume/Warwicks: In Conversation with Colum McCann The USD College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities Center, along with Warwick’s bookstore, will host National Book Award-winning author Colum McCann, as he discusses his first major non-fiction book, "American Mother." American Mother takes us deep into the story of Diane Foley, whose son Jim, a freelance journalist, was held captive by ISIS before being beheaded in the Syrian desert-the video shared online for all the world to see. In American Mother; Diane’s voice is channeled into searing reality by National Book Award winning author Colum McCann, who brings us on a journey of strength, resilience, and radical empathy. McCann will be in conversation with Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, associate professor of political science and international relations. Colum McCann has received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honors, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. His novels TransAtlantic (2013) and Apeirogon (2020) were longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. The 13th San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) Spring Showcase proudly announces the screening of "Smoking Tigers," a captivating drama directed by UC San Diego alum So Young Shelly Yo. This highly acclaimed film will be showcased at UltraStar Cinemas Mission Valley on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 8 p.m. Director So Young Shelly Yo and actress Ji-young Yoo are scheduled to appear for a post-screening Q&A. "Smoking Tigers" follows the story of 16-year-old Hayoung as she navigates her parents' separation while reluctantly attending an SAT prep camp. The film is an exploration of the world of affluent Koreans, filled with house parties and romantic interests, offering a compelling reflection on identity and societal expectations. Presented in English and Korean with subtitles, the film received recognition at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, winning awards for Best Performance (Ji-young Yoo) and Best Screenplay in the U.S. Narrative Feature category. Director So Young Shelly Yo, a distinguished UC San Diego alumna, brings her unique perspective and storytelling prowess to the screen in this award-winning debut. At Palomar College, he conducts the Chamber Singers and the Palomar Chorale, teaches applied voice, oversees the vocal music program, and leads the Palomar Choral Academy, an annual week-long immersive choral music experience for high school students. As Music Director of the SD Master Chorale, Dr. Russell conducts and coordinates all the Chorale’s artistic activities, including programming an entire concert season with performances around the San Diego region. In its 18th year, the Borrego Art Institute’s Annual Plein Air Invitational promises another outstanding exhibition of plein air paintings focusing on the unique beauty and environmental significance of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Borrego Valley. The exhibition will present a rich diversity of plein air paintings by a select group of 14 artists working in oils, watercolor and pastels, all producing work for the show during the week of March 4 – 9. Returning artists include Margaret Larlham, Geoffrey Allen and Natasha Isenhour. New work will go up daily in the main gallery March 4-8, and the gallery hours will be extended to 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. The awards and reception will be held Sat. March 9, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. The show will be up through April 14. The Invitational will once again be curated by Kay Levie, Rick J. "James Hubbell: Architecture of Jubilation" will be showing concurrently at the locations below: • Architecture of Jubilation - Central Library • A Mountain Home & Studios - Scripps Miramar Ranch Library • Pacific Rim Project - Mission Valley Library • Lado a Lado - Otay Mesa-Nestor Library In southern California, between the influences of San Diego, Tijuana and the Pacific; among mountains, manzanita, boulders and oaks, lives a man who builds a world he wants to live in - where the aesthetic is a reflection of nature - and philosophy and art are a way of life. Artist James Hubbell has a 70-plus-year career as a contemporary master who expresses himself through nature-inspired art, architecture and functional objects and spaces. Using stone and glass, paint and pen, wood and steel, his works are natural and unconfined. His human and nature-centric design places art in walls, roofs, floors, and furnishings, not separate from, but as extensions of life. In Hubbell’s world, the everyday is elevated to art, and art is for every day. Hubbell recognizes that it is our cities, buildings, structures - our treatment of our environment -that are perhaps our truest expressions of our views and values, our understanding of the ordering of the universe in which we live. Without great fanfare or financial reward, James Hubbell, the non-architect builder, personally led the design and construction of multiple architectural and fine art projects that accomplished meaningful social and educational transformation in Tijuana and San Diego. Architectural designer, sculptor, painter, stained-glass artist, community activist - James Hubbell is one of San Diego’s most prolific artists. His Architecture of Jubilation - is an invitation for all of us to create the world we want to live in. The Opening Reception will feature musician Pablo Dodero! Pablo is a producer, DJ, and writer originally from Tijuana, México. He is currently working on his PhD in Music at UCSD researching Mexico's electronic music history. He has been involved in the DIY music scene in Tijuana, San Diego, and Los Angeles for over two decades and currently performs experimental electronic music under the names Adiós Mundo Cruel and Les Temps Barbares. This exhibition was made possible by a collaboration between the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, the Library Foundation SD and the Ilan-Lael Foundation. This Project is an official community initiative of the World Design Capital San Diego/ Tijuana 2024. Featured programming will be occurring throughout the exhibition run.
