The 13th San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) Spring Showcase proudly announces the screening of "Smoking Tigers," a captivating drama directed by UC San Diego alum So Young Shelly Yo. "Smoking Tigers" follows the story of 16-year-old Hayoung as she navigates her parents' separation while reluctantly attending an SAT prep camp. The film is an exploration of the world of affluent Koreans, filled with house parties and romantic interests, offering a compelling reflection on identity and societal expectations. Presented in English and Korean with subtitles, the film received recognition at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, winning awards for Best Performance (Ji-young Yoo) and Best Screenplay in the U.S. Narrative Feature category. Director So Young Shelly Yo, a distinguished UC San Diego alumna, brings her unique perspective and storytelling prowess to the screen in this award-winning debut. "Smoking Tigers" not only entertains but also provokes thought on themes of adolescence, family dynamics, and cultural identity. John K. Russell, DMA, is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at Palomar College. He also serves as the Music Director of the San Diego Master Chorale. At Palomar College, he conducts the Chamber Singers and the Palomar Chorale, teaches applied voice, oversees the vocal music program, and leads the Palomar Choral Academy, an annual week-long immersive choral music experience for high school students. As Music Director of the SD Master Chorale, Dr. Russell conducts and coordinates all the Chorale’s artistic activities, including programming an entire concert season with performances around the San Diego region. In its 18th year, the Borrego Art Institute’s Annual Plein Air Invitational promises another outstanding exhibition of plein air paintings focusing on the unique beauty and environmental significance of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Borrego Valley. The exhibition will present a rich diversity of plein air paintings by a select group of 14 artists working in oils, watercolor and pastels, all producing work for the show during the week of March 4 – 9. Returning artists include Margaret Larlham, Geoffrey Allen and Natasha Isenhour. New work will go up daily in the main gallery March 4-8, and the gallery hours will be extended to 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. The awards and reception will be held Sat. March 9, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. The show will be up through April 14. The Invitational will once again be curated by Kay Levie, Rick J. The Photographer’s Eye Gallery is hosting an exhibit of hand-crafted photographic prints that were selected in its annual Alternative Photographic Processes juried exhibition, "(S)LIGHT OF HAND." More than 200 entries from across the United States were submitted for this exceptional exhibition. Michael Kirchoff, this year’s juror and editor of Analog Forever Magazine, narrowed down the prints to 40 for display, and named “Manzanita in the Round,” a photogravure by David Marsh, as his Juror’s Choice. Photographer’s Eye Director Donna Cosentino chose “Enchanted Forest,” a gum over salt print by Lisa Brussell, as the Director’s Choice. This exhibit opens on Sept. 14, with an artists’ reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on opening day, and will end on Oct. 19. The Photographer’s Eye Gallery, a non-profit, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment by calling 760-522-2170. The artworks on display are one-of-a-kind, hand-made works using myriad processes, including cyanotype, transfers, gum over platinum, chemilumens, tintypes, kallitypes, salt, phytogram, carbon transfer and more. 3-D works will also be on view. Each work will be accompanied by an explanation of the process involved to create it. In his juror’s statement, Kirchoff praised the artists for their creativity and skill in using historic and modern processes. “What I noticed when going through the submissions is the high caliber of images I found,” Kirchoff said. “Each submission was unique and special in its own way, and I discovered new photographers making excellent work.” He also said that “it is thoroughly evident to me that those living far and wide are playing an integral part in the success of this fine establishment.” The Photographer’s Eye will honor artists David Marsh and Lisa Brussell in a two person exhibit of their works in 2025. https://www.instagram.com/thephotographerseyecollective/ The Photographer’s Eye Collective on Facebook / Instagram
