About the exhibition: A colorful mix of symbolic forms, representations of abstract thought, and expressions of shared universal mysteries are at the heart of the work Ving Simpson created for more than twenty years at his home studio in Oceanside. The installation is a nonlinear representation of years of creative artistic endeavors, processes, and materials crafted with primal and soulful qualities. A central focus of the gallery is a recreation of the shelves that lined the artist’s studio, displaying an array of small, emblematic sculptures. The objects and compositions are minimal in form, often consisting of repeating patterns in rows and columns. They are constructed from a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials including silver, bronze, wood, metal, tar paper, found objects, and glazed and unglazed clay bodies. Select paintings will also illustrate the artist’s explorations into his perceptions of reality, primarily a series of large banners in the museum’s Grand Stairwell exploring artistic interpretations of water as liquid, gas, and solid. His first painting on canvas, Dancing Nuns painted in 1994, will also feature prominently as an homage to the complexities of interpersonal relationships and how they may inspire an impulse to expand creative horizons. This is the work of a dedicated artist–a maker of well-crafted art objects inspired by a mix of art history, science, and a personal mythology, woven together in an attempt to understand the subtle and sublime mysteries of reality. Simpson says about his practice, “The human path is one of symbols and abstractions. Lacking the facility to fathom the intricacies and mathematics of modern cosmology, I choose to explore the order of the universe using a few simple tools and my intuition.” Curated by Vallo Riberto. Each year the ARCS Foundation, San Diego Chapter, a non-profit organization led entirely by women, hosts a Scientist of the Year fundraiser to honor a preeminent local scientist. This year’s honoree, Dr. Terry Sejnowski, is one of the world’s foremost computer scientists and computational neuroscientists, whose visionary and ingenious work on neural networks laid the foundation for the machine learning and AI revolution that is taking the world by storm today. Dr. Sejnowski is head of Salk Institute’s Computational Neurobiology Laboratory and holder of the Frances Crick Chair. He is also a distinguished professor at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. ARCS San Diego invites you to join them for a celebration of science and scientists that is set for Saturday, April 27 (4 - 8 p.m.) at The Conrad Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. In addition to honoring Dr. Sejnowski, the program will pay tribute to this year’s ARCS Scholars – all 50 of them – along with distinguished ARCS Scholar alumnus, Dr. Randall Kelley, who has served as Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at several major corporations. All funds raised at this event will support future ARCS Scholars. Through their research, these talented Scholars make outstanding contributions to advance science and keep America competitive on the global stage, which is the ARCS mission. The Hillcrest Farmers Market is filled with over 175 vendors offering a wide variety of locally grow produce, gifts, arts and crafts, flowers, clothing, and more! The Center for World Music and the Indian Fine Arts Academy of San Diego present: Journeys with Kabir: Prahlad Singh Tipanya in Concert Padma Shri Prahlad Singh Tipanya is one of India’s most popular and highly honored folk singers. Renowned for singing the songs of Kabir, the great iconoclastic mystic of 15th-century North India, Tipanya is also a highly respected interpreter of Kabir’s spirituality. We are delighted to welcome this extraordinary musician and his troupe back to San Diego some 20 years after their first, unforgettably wonderful concert at the University of San Diego during their first US tour in 2003. Tipanya and his troupe of three musicians from his home village in North India will present a concert of devotional songs based on the mystical poems (dohas) of Kabir. During the concert, Dr. Linda Hess, retired professor of religious studies at Stanford University and a leading scholar and translator of Kabir, will present translations of the powerful poetry that the musicians will sing. This week of Summer Camp is all about learning to sew! In this 1-week camp, kids & teens will build sewing skills with a sewing machine. Kids will learn oodles of tips and tricks in this practical, hands-on camp, including skills like cutting, the use of rulers, project building and more. We’ll help them so they can use a sewing machine like a pro! This camp is recommended for children ages 8+ years.
