We wanted a creative way to tell their stories, while celebrating their work. So here is "Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker" - a photography exhibit that invites conversations about supporting local small businesses. We're showcasing butchers from Valley Farm Market and The Meatery, bakers Hija del Maiz and Astra Bakehouse, and candlemakers 1502 Candles and Moo Lala! How do artisan business owners and their families thrive in San Diego (which Architectural Digest named America's "most expensive city")? Rebecca Smith and TJ Carter are the collaborators of this installation. Gilbert Castellanos is a nationally renowned San Diego-based musician, composer, curator, educator and arranger, and one of the country’s top-call jazz trumpeters. For over a decade, Castellanos has been a member of The Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, performing around the world and recording with the acclaimed big band. He is a San Diego Music Awards six-time Best Jazz Artist and Artist of The Year, with partnerships with The San Diego Symphony, The San Diego Museum of Art, and The San Diego Ballet. He founded The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory in 2016 and continues to explore new opportunities to fulfill his personal mission of keeping jazz alive. Step back 2000 years into the enchanting yet gritty world of Mary Magdalene when Genesis Opera Theatre’s production of “Magdalene: The Musical” graces the stage on April 6 and 7, 2024, at the STAR Repertory Theatre, 329 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido. Mary Magdalene was one of the most misunderstood figures in the Bible. This hidden gem written by Sal Ponti was first produced in 1983 and enjoyed a two-year run in Los Angeles. It is a musical story of the confident, colorful harlot adored by everyone around her. Men wanted to be with her. Women wanted to BE her. Guided by the visionary direction of Cynthia Leigh and the harmonious musical direction of Abraham Fabella, "Magdalene: The Musical" has been lovingly recreated by Genesis Opera Theatre and is a musical with a heart of gold that promises to be an unforgettable experience. A day of spring will be celebrated at Diane Powers’ Bazaar del Mundo shops in Old Town with a tribute to beloved artist, Laurel Burch, and a curated selection of jewelry, fashion and décor at the free “Spring Pop-up, Curated by Bazaar del Mundo,” Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Bazaar del Mundo Shop courtyard. Laurel Burch’s unique images and designs became wildly popular in the '60s with her vividly colored feline images. While she passed away in 2007, her longtime fans continue to flock to the Bazaar del Mundo Shops which still feature her whimsical designs. Her daughter Aarin Burch will make an appearance to celebrate her mother’s 50th anniversary of the brand and showcase special anniversary items. Artists who typically make “art-to-wear” jewelry, accessories and home décor, will also be featured to show and sell their one-of-a-kind work.
