The La Jolla Open Aire Market is different than other farmers markets in that all proceeds benefit La Jolla Elementary (LJES), a public school. The proceeds from the market fund various initiatives enjoyed by all children at LJES, including school improvements and programs such as art, music, library, technology and additional classroom teachers to lower class sizes. The market was started by former La Jolla Elementary School mom and La Jolla community supporter, Sherry Ahern. In 1996, Sherry had two children enrolled at LJES and was on the Friends of La Jolla Elementary, Inc. Board, the school’s non profit education foundation. The original motivation for the market was to help fund a library and librarian. At the time, the school’s “library” consisted only of a small collection of books in the back of the auditorium. With help and support from San Diego Unified School District, local community groups, the Friends Board and Board President at the time Sarah Agler, the vision became a reality two years later. The first market was held on October 25, 1998 with 14 farmers and one artisan. The market has continued to grow and in addition to helping the children, the market has become a vibrant weekly community event and gathering place for the entire La Jolla community with over 120 vendors every Sunday, 25 years and counting…. The market would not be possible without the amazing support of the district and Friends of LJES foundation volunteers.

Robert Irwin was born in 1928 and was a leader in the California Light and Space art movement. He lived in San Diego, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego holds the largest collection of his works.

The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and Murals of La Jolla present Michael Mercil as he gives attendees an inside look on his career, process, recent projects, and 2023 mural ART IS GOOD FOR YOU, commissioned by Murals of La Jolla. The Ohio-based artist explores the realms of “the near, the low, the common” and incorporates an expansive number of mediums (drawing, painting, needlepoint, sculpture, landscape architecture, film, performance, teaching, and farming) in his art. Painted directly on-site, with a complementary color palette that pops, the text becomes a lively imperative to embrace art as a crucial and ubiquitous aspect of daily life. Mercil received a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and an MFA from the University of Chicago. His work has been featured in many prominent institutions, including The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; The Living Culture Initiative in collaboration with Ann Hamilton at OSU; The Beanfield, The Virtual Pasture, and Site set-aside projects at Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus; and the Art Market™, an ongoing, Columbus-based studio project. R.B. STEVENSON GALLERY is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Forest Bathing," showcasing a stunning collection of new paintings by San Diego-Los Angeles artist Jeanne Dunn. We would like to invite you to join us and meet the artist at the opening reception on Saturday September 7 from 5 - 8 p.m. Forest Bathing is the title of this new body of work because it relates to my current paintings and the motives behind their creation. The phrase comes from Japan, where the practice of shinrin-yoku, or literally “forest-bath,” is the name for the time-honored practice of walking in the woods for its benefits to the mind and body, a departure from one’s cares. My bold colors and semi-realistic forms take their cue from this idea of immersion in sensations and individual experiences of an arboreal place. By offering the unexpected in form, shape, and color, these tree-filled “scenes” aim to challenge our assumptions of what we might see along a wilderness trail. They express the joy of abandoning the familiar and encountering a new world that is vibrant, animated, and perhaps mysterious.
