The San Diego Archaeological Center is proud to host Donna Walker for an artifact drawing workshop. Unlike other professions where digital technology has replaced traditional methods, researchers in archaeology still rely on the detailed drawings that an illustrator can produce. Just open an archaeological report, magazine, or book, and you’ll find the majority of stone tools and pottery are shown as hand-done line drawings along with the photographs. Having both photographs and illustrations provides a complete analysis and a better representation of the artifact. In this class, you’ll learn this valuable technical skill of drawing chipped stone tools. Art supplies and snacks will be provided. Pennies from heaven...or maybe a little wink from the Universe when they show up on our path. This new series of artwork by Denise Cerro is created with lucky pennies in mind and will be on exhibit for two weeks in the F1VEart Gallery in the Arts District Liberty Station. Kick off the new year with the Borrego Art Institute and its annual showcase of contemporary Latin American art. Artists of Latino heritage or art that has been influenced by Latino culture, including paintings, photography and mixed media, will be featured in the main gallery. A strong contingent of Latino artists from Baja California will round out the show with exciting new work. In the north gallery, award-winning painter Jose Luis Nunez will present a solo exhibit of 20 original paintings highlighting the southern California desert. Nunez works primarily in oils and acrylics and is fascinated by the effects of light and shade on his subjects. Nunez will also teach a landscape painting course on January 20. Mariachi Mixteco will perform at the opening reception Jan. 6 from 3-5 p.m. The reception is part of the Borrego Springs ArtWalk and goes until 7:00 p.m. The shows run through Jan. 28.
