Kick off the new year with the Borrego Art Institute and its annual showcase of contemporary Latin American art. Artists of Latino heritage or art that has been influenced by Latino culture, including paintings, photography and mixed media, will be featured in the main gallery. A strong contingent of Latino artists from Baja California will round out the show with exciting new work. In the north gallery, award-winning painter Jose Luis Nunez will present a solo exhibit of 20 original paintings highlighting the southern California desert. Nunez works primarily in oils and acrylics and is fascinated by the effects of light and shade on his subjects. Nunez will also teach a landscape painting course on January 20. Mariachi Mixteco will perform at the opening reception Jan. 6 from 3-5 p.m. The reception is part of the Borrego Springs ArtWalk and goes until 7:00 p.m. The shows run through Jan. 28. This year we celebrate the music of San Diego composer and longtime friend of SDNM and NOISE Adam Greene, and we feature a new work by Mark Menzies commissioned by the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and generously underwritten by Garna Muller. Adam Greene trained as a guitarist and then studied composition at the New England Conservatory and UCSD. His music investigates multiplicity, fragility, and instability through sophisticated and idiosyncratic approaches to instrumental technique. Greek myths, especially Homer's Odyssey and the story of Orpheus, inspire many of his works, including all of his five pieces presented at soundON this year, two of which will be world premieres. This year we return to an old soundON tradition of highlighting the solo virtuosity of the members of NOISE, with challenging and adventurous works from many eras played by each of the seven musicians. And the ensemble once again introduces young and innovative composers, Jean-Patrick Besingrand, Patricia Martinez, Jérôme Combier, and Judith Ring—to San Diego.
