The story centers around Sara, a young woman whose relationship with wild bartender Tom is supplanted for a more reasonable and stable future with NYU scholar Michael. When Sara’s itch for passion returns, she finds herself enticed by a dangerous proposition and secretly diving into a sexy affair with Tom yet again, unbeknownst to her husband and daughter. How can it possibly last? There’s something chillingly perfect about presenting a murder ballad this time of year, and the skilled cast members capitalize on the danger of October, weaving the story together in a way that has audiences on the edge of their seats.The cast of four (Josalyn Johnson as the Narrator, Sarah LeClair as Sara, Jason Schlarmann as Tom, Robert Alegria as Michael, and Kylie Buckland as Sara/Narrator U/S) are accompanied by a live band led by Music Director Jerrica Ignacio that will have audiences rocking. And, now entering its second weekend, Murder Ballad has received positive acclaim from audiences, who rave in particular about the talent of the performers and the suspense inherent to a show that mashes together musical and murder. Third Sunday Craft is a monthly gathering of creative writers that fosters support, inspiration, and community. More than craft classes, Third Sunday Craft will help you construct and sustain a writing practice. New focus topics* for each session will challenge writers to explore and expand their craft. Generative writing prompts will encourage you to grow and learn in exciting new ways. Sharing your work within a safe, supportive community will help you discover and strengthen your voice. Finally, with the goal of fostering supportive accountability, each session will conclude with a writer’s intentions for the month. Come check out Third Sunday Craft! October’s Focus: October, Building Suspense: How do writers create suspense? How do they create and sustain suspense in scenes? What is a resolution? What is a reader most curious about when they read? What gets them to keep reading? Pre-Class Assignment: In one or two sentences, describe a problem a character has in the story. Make it simple and clear: Eg.: Johnny wants to plant a tree but he doesn’t have any seeds. Now, in bullet format, thing of ways you can create suspense for the character or create solutions for the character’s problem. Try to list at least 10! Be creative and explore the terrain. You will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours before the start of class. From the museum: A new public outdoor installation, "Los Trompos," is opening in the park across from The New Children’s Museum on October 8. To kick off the opening day celebrations, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. followed by a free all-day community celebration in the Museum Park with related art-making activities and food trucks for families to enjoy. Admission is required to experience installations inside the Museum. About "Los Trompos" Inspired by the popular children’s toy, "Los Trompos" consists of six colorfully woven, life-size spinning tops. Children are invited to team up to rotate the tops and climb inside for a spin, encouraging joyful play and collaboration with others. In Spanish, "Los Trompos" translates to “The Spinning Tops,” and the colorful surfaces of each top are woven in the traditional style of Mexican artisans. “The concept behind 'Los Trompos' is based on an approach of traditional toys, their colorful expression and the way they are constructed,” explained Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, two of Mexico’s leading designers and creators of "Los Trompos," which was originally exhibited at the Museum of High Art in Atlanta. “We wanted to talk about the traditions and skills of the craftsmen in Mexico, and an inheritance of our culture. We like the idea of translating these techniques into new symbols.” "Los Trompos" is a traveling installation jointly commissioned with the Bay Area Discovery Museum, where these lively, eye-catching and larger-than-life tops. All six spinning tops will be on display at The New Children’s Museum until January 2023, after which three of the tops will return to the Bay Area Discovery Museum. *located across from the main campus at the Extended Learning Building This lab based at the University of Buffalo brings an art and science duo to campus. This program includes a talk about the dynamic history and future of art fused with science with bio-artist Paul Vanouse and scientist Solon Morse. A hands-on workshop will give students the opportunity to create art with biology and experimental imaging methods. Vanouse has been working in emerging media forms since 1990 and is the recipient of prestigious international awards. Co-helming the Coalesce Center for Biological Art and collaborating on several art science projects, Morse guides artists through genomics and analysis.
