This is the second Olympics to feature surfing, but it's the first time competitors are riding waves that are a matter of "life or death," according to professional big wave surfer Garrett McNamara.

From the KPBS weekend arts preview: "A Kitschmas Pageant" is a festive, kitschy and artistic holiday-themed installation and performance spectacular at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights. On view will be a delightfully low-brow, strange, colorful exhibition of ornaments, animatronics, dioramas, sculptures and more. The exhibit is informed by the duo Brian & Ryan's commitment to kitsch as an art form. "I think not having access to much of contemporary our or art museums growing up, most of my exposure to visual culture was through objects and images, comic books, things that many artists probably are inspired by. But I think being able to appreciate something that's mass produced and maybe cheaply produced — or standing in line at 7-Eleven and looking at the gumball machines with the little toys inside and and just appreciating these, the smallest of gestures that somebody designed, that somebody spent time and energy making decisions," said Ryan Bulis. "By and large, I feel like an artist's responsibility is to shine light onto things that we sometimes overlook." At the opening reception, the artists will be on-site for performances, and will also feature festive DJ sets and performance art from local artists like Joe Cantrell, San Diego New Verbal Workshop, movement and "spectacle" from Yvette Dibos, live, giant sock knitting from Michelle Montjoy and more. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS Opening reception: 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1 On opening night, several San Diego artists, performers and DJs will fill the space with even more holiday cheer. From the KPBS/Arts newsletter: Playwright Lauren Gunderson's "dark revenge comedy" is inspired by one line of stage direction in Shakespeare's "The WInter's Tale" and follows a woman, Nan, and an unlikely set of best friends as they plan an over-the-top and, uh, grotesque "exit" from an abusive marriage. Directed by Kira Blaskovich, it's on stage at Coronado Playhouse Aug. 16 through Sept. 8. $24+. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: After years of abuse, Nan is finally ready to teach her abusive husband Kyle a lesson. With some assistance by her longtime best friend Simon (acting as her emotional, and actual, cheerleader) and an optimistic stripper named Sweetheart, Nan wants to make Kyle understand what he’s done is wrong before taking her final revenge. They hatch a plan inspired by Shakespeare’s immortal stage direction in The Winter’s Tale: “Exit, pursued by a bear.” With a flair for theatrics, the group tapes a drunk Kyle to a chair and reenact scenes from the couple’s painful past. In the piece de resistance, they plan to cover the room in meat and honey so Kyle will be mauled by a bear. Through this night of emotional trials and ridiculous theatrics, Nan and Kyle are both freed from their past in this dark and smart revenge comedy. Subtitled as “A Revenge Comedy,” Gunderson delivers nothing less, as the fast paced action screams towards Kyle’s fate. As the laughs roll, Gunderson cleverly confronts the issue of domestic abuse but at the same time walks the fine line between painful tragedy and unseemly comedy by examining multiple perspectives of those involved, each flawed, contradictory, and human. Exit, Pursued by a Bear is the first of three plays in the author’s “Shakespeare Cycle”, a series of contemporary comedies based on Shakespeare’s plays. Bobby Allison, whose life was full of tragedy even as he became one of the most celebrated NASCAR drivers of all time, died on Saturday. The Hall of Famer was 86.

American Sign Language (ASL) enhanced tours are FREE and take place every first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Timken is offering free tours of the collection in American Sign Language (ASL) for the Deaf and hearing impaired in partnership with Deaf Community Services and Palomar College's ASL program. Tours are led by the Timken's highly knowledgeable docents and accompanied by ASL interpreters from Palomar College's ASL-English-Translation and Interpreting Studies Program.
