  • Join us on Free Second Sunday for Play Day! Celebrate the legacy of long-time San Diego resident Robert Irwin, who created innovative site-specific artworks that explore the effects of light through interventions in space and architecture. Taking inspiration from Irwin's use of light, we will play with its natural and artificial sources by casting shadows in a shadow puppet theater and learning the differences between translucent, transparent, and opaque objects. Art activity: Inspired by the radiant glass sculpture Spanish Fan (1995), on view in MCASD’s Sculpture Garden, create a faux-stained glass rainbow with colored cellophane paper and hang them on your favorite window in Prebys Learning Center. Schedule: At 10 a.m., explore our galleries with a kid friendly tour At 12:30 p.m., listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Ms. Katia, Librarian On the Go. From 10 a.m. -1 p.m., enjoy music, a book nook, and free play on McGrath Terrace.   • Join us for our Lowercase Modern Calligraphy workshop for beginners, where you will learn the art of hand lettering using a traditional pointed dip pen and ink with a contemporary approach. Many people find Modern Calligraphy attractive to learn because it allows them to create beautiful, fun, and hand-crafted letters that are unique and personal. Modern Calligraphy is often characterized by its use of thick and thin lines, which give the letters a dynamic and expressive quality. Enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages. Space is limited, so be sure to register early. *Please Note: We offer two separate workshops focusing on Modern Calligraphy.   • The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library welcomes Anne Labovitz for a special presentation of her career, process, recent projects, and exhibition "The Blue Hour." The reception begins at 6 p.m. and is followed by a 6:30 p.m. lecture. Inspired by the blue cast of twilight, Anne Labovitz uses light and its profound meanings in various contexts as the central construct of "The Blue Hour." She aims to respond to today’s world by challenging isolation, loneliness, and disconnection through activating color and light in large-scale works. Labovitz has an extensive international exhibition history and has work in many private and public collections, including the Walker Art Center; Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport; Mayo Clinic; Minnesota Marine Art Museum; International Portrait Gallery, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Växjö Konsthall, Sweden; Isumi City Offices, Japan; the University of Raparin, Rania Iraqi Kurdistan; the City of Petrozavodsk, Russia; and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. She is an adjunct professor and mentor in the MFA program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
