  • Despite its weighty, multi-tiered approach — this is not, on multiple levels, an easy read — Darrin Bell's debut graphic memoir is difficult to put down.
  • John Singleton Copley began his career in Boston painting portraits which contributed vitally to the forging of a social identity for the American merchant class. While the American Revolution was brewing, Copley was busy painting portraits and expanding his reputation as the premiere artist in pre-Revolutionary America. His portrait of Mrs. Thomas Gage was an unusual example. She was the wife of Thomas Gage, commander in chief of the British forces in North America. The beauty of her portrait was undisputed. The artist himself deemed it “beyond compare the best lady’s portrait I ever drew.” When he sent it to London, there were those who criticized it because they expected that a portrait of the distinguished wife of a British commander would be less artistic, less informal, a more rigorous likeness. Was there more to Margaret Kemble Gage than her beauty and her languid pose? Join us for this docent-led talk to learn more. • San Diego Writers, Ink brings to you part two of four Literary Salon meetings on Cormac McCarthy’s "All the Pretty Horses" being held in January. For best results, participants should plan to finish reading the novel before the meeting. More accessible than McCarthy’s “darker” work, "All the Pretty Horses" is arguably McCarthy’s most readable, narratively driven work. Is this a traditional cowboy tale, rife with adventure, horses, romance, and mythic sunset, or is McCarthy’s craft telling a different story? What are the themes that pervade McCarthy’s novel? What is the novel fixated on? How are those questions made apparent? Date | Tuesday, January 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Location | Online via Zoom Register here! Members: $20 Nonmembers: $25 You will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours before the start of class.
