From the organizer: Acclaimed Israeli documentary filmmaker Ran Tal will screen his 2012 film “Garden of Eden” and discuss his work. The film examines the depths of Israeli society in the least expected place – a national holiday resort – presenting viewers with a fascinating account full of humor, pain and compassion. A recipient of numerous awards in Israel and abroad, Tal most recently won accolades at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival for his new film “1341 Frames of Love and War,” about photographer Micha Bar-Am. Tal is the head of the MFA documentary film program at the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television at Tel Aviv University. The Hyde Art Gallery is excited to launch the Fall 2022 semester with IN•SIGHT, the Visual Arts and Humanities Department Faculty and Staff Exhibition. This exhibition will showcase artwork produced by the arts educators here at Grossmont College and provide students, colleagues, and campus visitors with a glimpse into the creative and professional work being created by the faculty and staff within the Art Department. Featuring a diverse range of media, this exhibit also represents the various disciplines taught within Grossmont College's art programs including ceramics, digital media, drawing, jewelry, painting, photography, and sculpture. For parents of teenagers, adolescence can be challenging, but to a brain scientist it's a time of breathtaking development. And it's a "window of opportunity" on the way to becoming an adult.

Pop Smoke: A Veteran Art Exhibition is a survey of veteran artists who utilize bright colors, basic shapes, commonplace images, or repetitive means of production within their art making practice. Several early Pop Movement artists served in the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War, including Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Richard Artschwager. This exhibition is a nod to those early veteran pop artists as we turn our attention to veteran artists who continue to use similar moods. By exploring veteran art making practices in ways that are playful, tongue in cheek and ironic, we consider the many different forms and artistic tones that poignant artistic expression can take. We also examine the multitudes of the veteran artist identity: Who is a veteran artist? And what is veteran art? The exhibition's title is a military slang term referring to throwing smoke grenades as a means of cover or escape during battle. The term "pop smoke" is also common slang that means "to leave a place". This exhibition is developed in partnership with The Veterans Art Project (VETART) and the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC). Join us for an artist talk on August 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ! Lori Mitchell, and Gillian Moss will all share more about themselves, their process, and their works in their exhibition, Turning Tides! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide.
