  • A faithless shepherd, a lovelorn shepherdess, and a charlatan magician meet in a pastoral tale of jealousy, romance, and magic. On January 27 and 28, at San Diego’s historic Liberty Station, Cinballera Entertainment presents Bastien und Bastienne, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s first opera, paired with an original ballet of the same story. On January 27, it would have been Mozart’s 268th birthday! In honor of this occasion, Cinballera is putting on the rarely performed Bastien und Bastienne, which he wrote at age thirteen. This charming, one-act chamber opera features only three characters and displays the young composer’s early genius in its beautiful melodies. It will be sung in German with live piano accompaniment, but the extensive dialogue will be spoken in historically-inspired English, to better present the story. The second half will feature the world premiere of a brand-new ballet based on Bastien und Bastienne, written and choreographed by Rebekah and Tiffany Brannan. Set to Gabriel Faure’s pastoral orchestral suite Masques et bergamasques, it tells the story of the opera through dance! About Cinballera Entertainment Cinballera Entertainment is an independent fine arts production company, founded by sisters Tiffany and Rebekah Brannan in June 2023. The name stands for Cinema, Ballet, and Opera, its three main areas of focus. Last year, they put on four original productions at unique locations throughout San Diego County. Like all Cinballera productions, Bastien und Bastienne will be staged with subtlety, taste, and decency, so viewers of all ages and backgrounds can come. However, they are not geared exclusively to children; they tell mature, exciting stories in a clean, artistic way. Operatic soprano Tiffany Brannan will star in the opera, and professional ballerina Rebekah Brannan will play the leading lady in the ballet. They will be joined by a group of talented professional singers and dancers. Don't miss this delightful tribute to classical music and pastoral romance! • Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the New York City-based IsidoreString Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were brand new, and the new as if it were firmly established.’ Outside the concert hall the quartet has worked with PROJECT: MUSIC HEALS US providing encouragement, education, and healing to marginalized communities-including elderly, disabled, rehabilitating incarcerated and homeless populations-who otherwise have limited access to high-quality live music performance. The name Isidore recognizes the ensemble’s musical connection tothe Juilliard Quartet: one of that group’s early members was legendary violinist Isidore Cohen. Additionally, it acknowledges a shared affection for a certain libation-legend has it a Greek monk named Isidore concocted the first genuine vodka recipe for the Grand Duchy of Moscow!
