Win prizes while learning about controversial books! Join the San Diego Public Library on September 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mary Hollis Clark Meeting Room to play some Banned Book Bingo. Refreshments will be provided. Banned Books Week’s objective is to raise awareness regarding the censorship of books throughout the country. According to the American Library Association, more than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. 729 of those challenges were in 2021. The vast majority (82-97%) of book challenges and removals are never reported or receive media attention. Typically held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community—librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types—in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

The project will consist of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and four-bedroom units designed around the Stadium Station trolley stop and public transit.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has grown from a small group of African American dancers to a revolutionary company that transcends barriers and celebrates the African American cultural experience. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.” Under the decade-long leadership of its visionary artistic director, Robert Battle, the company continues to honor the monumental legacy of its founder, while expanding the Ailey repertory and developing the next generation of choreographers. Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to helping perinatal mothers and their families during their time of need by providing transportation, mental health assistance and supportive services, is ditching its traditional fall gala season and inviting the community to bring out their flared pants, maxi dress, and fringe at Boogie 4 Babies. Boogie4Babies guests will enjoy a hosted cocktail reception, dinner, live entertainment, a spectacular live auction, and nonstop dancing to live music by ABBA LA.  Funds raised will directly support Miracle Babies’ programs, which includes expanding and increasing the much-needed support for transportation to and from the hospital and mental health support for moms experiencing maternal mental health disorders. “Over the last 12 months, Miracle Babies has assisted over 8,000 families thanks to its generous supporters,” said Marianela Camarillo, Executive Director at Miracle Babies. “Through our programs we seek to improve health and mental well-being and address inequities for parents through free access to transportation, supportive services, and resources.” To purchase tickets to Boogies 4 Babies, please visit here! Fall Equinox is that time of the year when the hours of daylight and nighttime are of equal length, it’s also the time of celebrating the harvest and preparing for the winter ahead. In this Equinox observance, we’ll gather in San Diego’s expansive Balboa Park to observe and respond to the changing of the season. During our time together, we’ll discuss Equinox lore and legend, and explore our many links and connections with the season and retreat into our notebooks and journals to harvest remembrances of summer-past and note our intentions for the coming season. Join us for the opening reception for Turning Tides, Saturday, August 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. This is an opportunity to engage with these amazing 12 Women Artists, and their works. We are so excited for this event. Light bites and refreshments will be served!
