Fall Equinox is that time of the year when the hours of daylight and nighttime are of equal length, it’s also the time of celebrating the harvest and preparing for the winter ahead. Before long, she was leading the Auntie Sewing Squad, a work-from-home sweatshop of hundreds of volunteers—including children and her own mother—to fix the U.S. public health care system while in quarantine. It was a feminist care utopia forming in the midst of crisis. Or was it a mutual aid doomsday cult? With hilarity and boundless generosity, she invites the audience in on her work building community in isolation, while reflecting on what we’d been through and imagining what we wanted to become. You don’t just see an Alvin Ailey performance, you feel it. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has grown from a small group of African American dancers to a revolutionary company that transcends barriers and celebrates the African American cultural experience. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.” Under the decade-long leadership of its visionary artistic director, Robert Battle, the company continues to honor the monumental legacy of its founder, while expanding the Ailey repertory and developing the next generation of choreographers. Join us for the opening reception for Turning Tides, Saturday, August 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. This is an opportunity to engage with these amazing 12 Women Artists, and their works. We are so excited for this event. Light bites and refreshments will be served!
