  • In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Maraya Performing Arts is hosting a summit that offers educational master classes and professional performances for kids and their families who are interested in the performing arts and entertainment industry. The summit will feature a variety of activities, including introductory classes in musical theatre, acting, and various dance styles such as ballet, hip hop, breakdancing, and contemporary dance. One of the highlights of the event is the "Industry Kids" panel discussion, designed for children aged 4-17 years old who aspire to become professional performers on stage, in TV/film, and commercials. This panel discussion will provide valuable insights and advice from Filipino professionals in the arts industry, including former Maraya Performing Arts student and TV/film triple threat youth actor, Romi Herrada (known for Paramount Plus' "My Dream Quinceanera" and Disney Pixar's upcoming animated series "Win or Lose") and Kim Montelibano Heil, local Casting Director at The Old Globe Theatre. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and lunch throughout the day. Additionally, Maraya Performing Arts is partnering with the San Diego Blood Drive to host a blood drive in the parking lot during the event, providing an opportunity for attendees to give back to the community.   • As part of the exhibition, "Over/Under: Woven Craft at Mingei" San Diego artist Yomar Augusto will be painting a large mural inside the Museum. Augusto's lyrical, linear paintings evoke woven forms, and visitors can watch Yomar paint the mural live in the Gallery. Born in Brasilia and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Augusto initially trained as a graphic designer before studying photography at the School of Visual Arts. He then started his own studio in Rio before completing a Masters in Type Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands, then continued working in type, design, and art in both commercial and educational sectors. His projects have been presented worldwide, and he has taught at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, Bauhaus University in Weimar, and locally at San Diego State University. Recipients were nominated by 17 local arts professionals and selected by an esteemed panel of curators from respected institutions: Pedro Alonzo - Adjunct Curator, Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, Texas, Susanna Temkin - Curator at El Museo del Barrio, New York, New York, Kathryn Kraczon - Director of Exhibitions of the Brown Arts Institute (BAI) and Chief Curator of the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, Providence Rhode Island.
