The festival moved permanently to the San Diego Surf Sports Park last year and has proved to be extremely successful. Guests and artists love its easy freeway access and ample convenient parking. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy this prestigious juried festival, now in its 36th year. This age 21 and up event showcases stunning works of painting, sculpture, photography, glass, jewelry, ceramics, wood, fiber and mixed media from more than 150 world renowned artists. Ticket sales (starting at $13), a silent auction and wine and beer sales all benefit local adaptive sports programs supporting thousands of San Diegans with disabilities. The San Diego Festival of the Arts Foundation, Inc., through this primary fundraiser, has raised more than $2.7 million for this cause since 1987. Beyond the incredible selection of art on display available for purchase, guests will once again enjoy world-class live music and entertainment both days, a selection of outdoor lawn games and a variety of cuisine options for every palate, from gourmet wood-fired pizza to BBQ and more. The open and expansive setting in beautiful coastal North County offers many opportunities to wander between artist booths, enjoy delicious food and drinks and take in a number of the musical performances each day in a tranquil and park-like venue.   • The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will present "Alexis Smith: The American Way," the first retrospective of California artist Alexis Smith (b. 1949, Los Angeles, CA) in thirty years. Smith is widely known for her mixed-media collage works which draw heavily on film, literature, and pop culture. Her unique practice has been informed by Conceptual and Pop art and shaped by the Feminist movement of the 1970s, yet she has set out a path all her own and her consistently defies easy categorization. Through the works featured in "The American Way", Smith presents stories of self-realization and self-transformation—examining the role of these narratives in creating a distinctively American mythology. Featuring work produced throughout the artist's career, from the 1970s to the 2010s, this exhibition highlights the themes that permeate the artist's oeuvre, including her interests in gender, identity, and class.   • The Little Italy Association invites the public to attend its annual State of the Neighborhood event at the Piazza della Famiglia on Thursday, September 22 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Hear from Chief Executive Administrator of the Little Italy Association, Marco Li Mandri, on the success of the neighborhood during the pandemic, as well as any new events, new art installations, upcoming projects and new initiatives going on in the neighborhood. Attendance for the event is free, but there is a VIP ticket option for $50 that includes one entrée from the Little Italy Food Hall, a glass of wine, a pre-selected dessert and reserved seating for the presentation. General seating in the piazza will act on a first come, first serve basis. The community is welcome to arrive early and enjoy food, snacks and beverages from surrounding Little Italy restaurants or even grab a glass of wine or beer at the Little Italy Food Hall to enjoy during the presentation.
