  • NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER The 2022 San Diego Festival of the Arts will return to San Diego Surf Sports Park in North San Diego on Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11. The festival moved permanently to the San Diego Surf Sports Park last year and has proved to be extremely successful. Guests and artists love its easy freeway access and ample convenient parking. Residents are encouraged to come out and enjoy this prestigious juried festival, now in its 36th year. This age 21 and up event showcases stunning works of painting, sculpture, photography, glass, jewelry, ceramics, wood, fiber and mixed media from more than 150 world renowned artists. Ticket sales (starting at $13), a silent auction and wine and beer sales all benefit local adaptive sports programs supporting thousands of San Diegans with disabilities. The San Diego Festival of the Arts Foundation, Inc., through this primary fundraiser, has raised more than $2.7 million for this cause since 1987. Beyond the incredible selection of art on display available for purchase, guests will once again enjoy world-class live music and entertainment both days, a selection of outdoor lawn games and a variety of cuisine options for every palate, from gourmet wood-fired pizza to BBQ and more. The open and expansive setting in beautiful coastal North County offers many opportunities to wander between artist booths, enjoy delicious food and drinks and take in a number of the musical performances each day in a tranquil and park-like venue. • The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will present "Alexis Smith: The American Way," the first retrospective of California artist Alexis Smith (b. 1949, Los Angeles, CA) in thirty years. Smith is widely known for her mixed-media collage works which draw heavily on film, literature, and pop culture. Her unique practice has been informed by Conceptual and Pop art and shaped by the Feminist movement of the 1970s, yet she has set out a path all her own and her consistently defies easy categorization. Through the works featured in "The American Way", Smith presents stories of self-realization and self-transformation—examining the role of these narratives in creating a distinctively American mythology. Featuring work produced throughout the artist's career, from the 1970s to the 2010s, this exhibition highlights the themes that permeate the artist's oeuvre, including her interests in gender, identity, and class.
