From the gallery: ONE, Quint’s Logan Heights satellite space, will exhibit Light & Space artist Robert Irwin’s #7 x 8' (Blue Lou 2), a 2015 work which reflects his ongoing exploration of light, shadow, reflection, and color as material and tools for perception. Blue Lou 2 stems from the artist’s return to a studio practice which experiments with sculpture employing vertically-mounted fluorescent light bulbs wrapped in layers of theatrical gels, while continuing to expand upon his installation practice. Irwin’s inquiries into perception have expanded the definition of artmarking to include “site-conditional” art, which responds to the surrounding environment while drawing attention away from the materials themselves and removing the separation between the artwork and the space itself. These ephemeral viewing experiences and architectural interventions in both indoor and outdoor sites have defined his 60-year career and enduring legacy in contemporary art. About the artist: Born in 1928 in Long Beach, California and a longtime resident of San Diego, Robert Irwin has completed numerous permanent installations around the world, including 1° 2° 3° 4° (1997) at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which blurred the space between the gallery and ocean by cutting four windows to expose the space to exterior light, air, smells, and sounds. In 2016, Irwin’s large-scale permanent installation and courtyard design Untitled (dawn to dusk) opened at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, occupying a dilapidated former hospital building measuring approximately 10,000 square feet. Irwin divided the building’s interior into two wings—making one wing dark and the other light through the employment of evenly spaced windows and scrims bisecting each side. Irwin has also completed numerous site-conditioned landscape design projects, including the Central Gardens at the J. Front man Kyler Jakubowski has utilized his North Carolina roots and over the years has created a very unique blues sound not heard since the 50’s, Austin Wagner links the rhythm and melody with his smooth motown influenced James Jameson style, and Martin Quezada holds the beat on drums with his Caribbean swing, all of which when brought together creates what is now known as the one and only Gypsy Sally. To date, Gypsy Sally has recorded one album, "How Long," recorded live in the studio with Alan Sanderson. Gypsy Sally is named after a bar in the song "Tecumseh Valley" by Townes Van Zandt. Apart from Van Zandt, the band is influenced by classic blues artists like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Peter Green. However, in addition to the blues, the band also draws influence from the vocals of Sam Cooke, and the rock guitar of Rory Gallagher. Zo is 34 years old and has been a performing guitarist for 12 years. He has been teaching people how to play and understand the guitar/piano for four years. Born in London, he was raised in North County, San Diego, where he currently resides. He is a graduate of CSULB with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, and during his time there he studied Blues, Pop, Rock, Soul, Funk, Classical, and Irish Folk Music. While at CSULB he joined an Irish Folk Band, and started his own Blues band along with vocalist Christina Wilson. He’s studied under many influential guitarists across the country. In Los Angeles, Ron Eschete and Mike Higgins. In New York, Peter Mazza, Gilad Hekselman, and Michael Valeanu. Finally, in San Diego he studied with Bob Boss, Lorraine Castellanos, Fred Kunze. These experiences have prepared him for large ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, and solo guitar performances in a variety of styles. "Tethered" is a free, multimedia dance performance curated by Lexii Regina and Micah Parra. Come enjoy a showing of current works exploring the possibilities of dance with bungee cord. Showing will feature dance film, new choreographed works, live music, and improvisation . Following the performance, there will be an opportunity to speak with the artists and performers. Performances will be held on June 7th, 2024 at 7 pm and 8 pm. This event is made possible by funding from the NTC Foundation.

Pacific Arts Movement presents the 24th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival from Nov. 2 - 11, 2023, the largest showcase of Asian and Asian American cinema in North America.
