The Soul Rebels Announce Spring Tour Dates with Special Collaboration The Soul Rebels, the renowned New Orleans-based brass ensemble known for their electrifying blend of jazz, funk, and hip hop, announced their highly anticipated spring tour dates. The 11-city tour, which kicks off May 3rd at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, is followed by performances across the United States, with special collaborations in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and New York City. Several tour stops feature iconic guest artists, including Ghostface KIllah, GZA, Talib Kweli, Seun Kuti, Chris Dave, Fred Wesley, and Marcus Miller. Commenting on the upcoming tour, The Soul Rebels’ manager, Alex Kurland, emphasized their commitment to working with the best in the industry. "When The Soul Rebels collaborate, it is with highly respected and iconic artists," said Kurland. The Soul Rebels will continue their tour on June 20 at The Howard Theatre in Washington, DC, where they will collaborate for a one-night-only performance with legendary hip-hop artists Ghostface Killah and GZA. This special pairing promises an unforgettable evening of innovative music at one of Washington, DC's most iconic locations. Kickoff LGBTQ+ Pride season on Friday, June 28 with our monthly Songwriter Sanctuary concert series featuring San Diego's finest songwriters. This month, we'll invite three local LGBTQ+ acts to perform in a Nashville-style round, sharing the stories and inspirations behind their beautiful songs. Hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. Songwriter Sanctuary LGBTQ+ Pride Edition Featured Artists: Ben Parks is a San Diego based indie pop singer-songwriter. Originally a pastor’s kid from the south, he developed his roots in Gospel music, honing in a mastery of intimate piano melodies and hauntingly passionate vocals. Over the past few years, Ben has wandered new territory and established an attractive alt. pop/rock sound bordering the likes of Phil Collins, MUNA, The 1975, and Maggie Rogers. His latest single “Why Does Everybody Leave?”, simultaneously invokes reflection and release for its listeners, adding Ben’s name to a list of “Sad Gay Pop” artists that know how to make you feel. Virr also found his musical beginnings in a church setting, singing in choirs across his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Initially influenced by artists like Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, and Coldplay, Virr went onto join the Navy in 2009, where he was exposed to an even broader range of music from around the world. Since 2014, Virr has been based in San Diego and has performed his music across the country. Virr utilizes his LGBTQ+ identity as a tool for connection, expressing himself with honesty and rizz (charisma). RhythMx is an act of ever-evolving magic, featuring live and electronic elements with songs that explore themes of transformation. This is an amazing series in a beautiful and affirming space, not to mention a wonderful opportunity to see these local LGBTQ+ artists perform their original works in an intimate setting. Explore the sense of touch through artworks that generate a sensory experience, and consider how these works exist within the confines of an art museum where touch is not encouraged. Then, we will guide you through creating a tactile piece and learn the basics of casting. We will draw inspiration from Kelly Akashi’s "Cultivator" (2021), which highlights her interest in fluid, impressionable materials and old-world craft techniques, and Robert Irwin’s "1°2°3°4°" (1997), which uniquely engages many senses at once. "Reflections" is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Session 4: December 1 & December 8 In this workshop series participants will explore how ideas about the body integrate into contemporary art. Through close looking, we will engage with artworks where the body is present, and where its notable absence invokes the body. Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Transportation will be provided, if required. Participants may join one session (two days) or more!
