Education ReporterKyla Calvert is the education reporter forKPBS, producing multimedia content for radio, television and the Web. Kyla began producing web content while working in marketing in San Francisco. She decided to change careers and received a master’s degree in journalism with a concentration in digital media from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2009. While in school she freelanced for City Hall and The Capitol newspapers covering New York City and state politics and policy. After completing her degree, she worked as a fellow for Hearst Newspapers on “Dead By Mistake” a nationwide investigative project about medical error. The project received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award. Kyla moved to San Diego from Beaufort County, South Carolina where she covered county government for The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette.

Holim Lee’s family identified him as one of two people found dead in a Skyline apartment yesterday morning after an eight-hour standoff with local and federal law enforcement. San Diego Police Officer Christopher Wilson was fatally shot as officers first entered the apartment. Lee may have been the shooter. His brother Hojin, however, remembers him as a generous caretaker who was proud to serve his county in the Coast Guard. -
The walls of the Black Contractors’ Association Training Center in Encanto are plastered with posters for Barbara Boxer, Jerry Brown and Barack Obama. All of them have come out against Proposition 23, which would delay the state’s new greenhouse-gas regulations until the jobs picture improves.

More than 10,000 people spent a night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing in San Diego County between October 2008 and September 2009. Homeless advocates estimate thousands more need beds.

On the surface, San Diego County’s jobs picture seemed virtually unchanged in September. The unemployment rate held steady at 10.6 percent. There were 100 fewer non-farm jobs in the county, and 200 additional agricultural workers.
