CHP Commissioner Issues July 4 Challenge

The California Highway Patrol commissioner is issuing a challenge to drivers in the state to see if we can get through one day – July 4—without having a fatal traffic collision. CHP Spokesman Tom Marshall says it’s a rare occurance.

Marshall: That’s only happened three times in history on any day of the year none of those were holidays so if this happens it would be the first time.

Those dates were in 1968, 1991, and 2000. Marshall says the best way to prepare for such a goal is wear seatbelts, don’t speed and make sure you have a designated driver if you’re going to drink.

Extra officers will be out on the roadways looking for problems. Last year on July fourth sixteen people were killed. Marshall says the last time the fourth landed in the middle of the week  eight people died on California roadways.
