Hairspray

1962... JFK was in The White House... John Glenn was in orbit... Cadillacs had fins... Beehives were in... And girls really knew how to tease! Thats the way John Waters Hairspray announced itself back in 1988. His film has since been adapted to a Broadway musical and this summer Hairspray (opening July 20 throughout San Diego) makes its way back to the big screen. Dan Margules

An earlier film-to-stage-to-film hat trick: "Little Shop of Horrors." -----

Oh good one! I completely forgot about that. Thanks for posting. I wonder if there are anymore lurking out there. Evil Dead just got turned into a musical that's playing well in its debut in Canada so that has the potential.

I think John's Edna was really well done but I have not seen the musical or the original. And what's wrong with the movie being shot in Toronto?

It's not that there's really anything wrong with shooting in Toronto but Waters is so closely associated with Baltimore and has always made a point of shooting there that having Toronto stand in for Baltimore is ironic. Check out the original, though, Divine is simply divine.
