Torrey Pines is one of 220 state parks that could be closed as lawmakers struggle to fill California’s $24 billion deficit. The rally was part of a statewide effort by the California State Parks Foundation. Patricia Masters is with the Torrey Pines Association, a non-profit group that supports the park. She says people need to know what could happen to Torrey Pines.

“The Reserve is slated for closure under the current budget cutbacks. If Sacramento does not come up with an alternative source of funding, the Reserve and state beach will close right after Labor Day,” she says.

Masters says it’s uncertain what would happen if the state cut off funding to maintain the park. It’s estimated closing the parks would save California $150 million.
