Pendleton Marine In Critical Condition After Accident

A young serviceman gravely injured last weekend in a freeway accident that killed a fellow Camp Pendleton Marine remained hospitalized in critical condition today, officials reported.

Lance Cpls. Rory Sackinger of Douglas, Ore., and Zackery Johnston of Jackson, Mich., both 21, ran onto Interstate 5 into the path of a northbound 2009 Nissan Altima near Harbor Drive in Oceanside shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to 1st Marine Logistics Group public affairs.

Johnston died at the scene. Medics took Sackinger to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he remains in the intensive care unit.

It was unclear why the servicemen were trying to cross the freeway on foot.
