Lawmakers Bracing for Busy End to Legislative Session

Lawmakers Bracing for Busy End to Legislative Session
Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg said he plans to focus on boosting the state’s struggling economy during the legislative session's last few weeks. But Republicans think the Democrats will also have to do some budget cleanup.

Ask a politician from any party what their focus is these days, and chances are you’ll hear three words: jobs, jobs, jobs. That’s Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg’s focus the next few weeks. He wants to work on several measures to boost California’s economy. Including “reasonable regulatory reform, streamlining permitting, providing incentives for California employers who hire and retain California workers.”

But Republican Senator Bob Huff thinks the Democrats’ changes won’t go far enough. Beyond that, Huff also believes the state’s new spending plan needs a lot of cleanup.

He stated, “there’s some huge holes in this budget. There’s about $10 billion worth of risk, is how we’d characterize it. And when you have that much at risk, we’re going to be dealing with this for a while.”

Lawmakers also have hundreds of bills to deal with before the legislative session ends in about three-and-a-half weeks.
