A new report from the California Budget Project predicts some major demographic shifts will affect the state between now and 2020. The report says the biggest change will be an increase in the number of Californians 65 and older. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The report projects the number of seniors in California is expected to increase by 71 percent by 2020. The report predicts almost one in seven Californians will be over the age of 65 by 2020.

Barbara Baran is associate director of the California Budget Project.

Baran: "We project that this has real implications for the kinds of policies we're gonna need in terms of services in healthcare and other kinds of support services for older Californians."

Baran says another looming challenge is an increase in enrollment in California's colleges and universities. These schools are expected to add more than 700,000 undergraduates by 2013.
