Many business leaders strongly oppose the immigration bill before the House of Representatives. California's Hotel and Lodging Association says the bill would not fix the country's broken immigration system and it would burden employers. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Among many provisions critics call draconian, the bill would require employers nationwide to screen all workers to make sure they're in the country legally. The legislation would also fine employers $25,000 for every illegal hire.
Jim Abrams is the President and CEO of the California Hotel and Lodging Association. He says the system employers would use to verify employees is error prone. And he says employers would be on the hook for the system's mistakes.
Abrams: "It's going to put employers large and small at great risk without any assurances that what they try and do to comply with the system is going to in fact help them to deal with the problem and not put them at legal risk."
Abrams says the House bill's lack of a guest worker program will perpetuate illegal immigration and hiring. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
