In 1969, a devastating oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara inspired the idea for Earth day. The first Earth Day, April 20, 1970, brought millions of Americans together to develop plans to protect the environment. And, one organization believes too many Americans -population growth - is the biggest threat to the environment.
