More than 130,000 students in San Diego are expected to report to school today. District officials are hoping that each student will make it to class. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
San Diego Unified school district officials say for the past several years, a large number of students simply don't show up for the first day or the first month of school. That's why they've launched a back-to-school campaign called 90506 - which is today's date. School superintendent Carl Cohn says poor attendance impacts student achievement.
Cohn: It's really important for every child to be there, from the very first day of school, to establish a habit of school attendance.
District officials say the state gives San Diego Unified about $20 for every student who receives a day of instruction. The district stands to receive $6 million if student attendance increases by 1 percent this month. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
