Disabled students at Lindberg Schweitzer Elementary School in San Diego have some new high-tech tools in their classroom. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Patti Read teaches students with physical, mental or auditory disabilities. She recently secured a technology grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation which paid for new high-tech tools in her class.
The technology makes it easier for her students to learn and share work. For example, a new classroom computer reads essays written by Read's students.
Read : All whales have blow holes, nostrils on top of their head for breathing.
Read says this system is important for students who can't speak or who have problems speaking.
Read : They're very eager to share their work now. Where as before, if they thought they were going to have to struggle to read their work, they would not want to participate.
Read says she's grateful for the $6,000 grant because most special-ed classes lack the technology needed.
