Union: $40 Million Needed to Even-Out San Diego Teacher Salaries

San Diego union officials say it will take $40 million to bring teaching salaries up to par with other school districts in the county. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Administrators and union leaders think there are 14 ways the district could free up money for San Diego teachers salaries. Some recommendations include restructuring salary schedules and closing down campuses with low student enrollments. But both sides say the most viable option so far may be an early retirement program.

Union leader Dick Gale says more empty teaching positions means more financial flexibility.

Gale : We want to take those savings and we want to put that back into teachers compensation in terms of salaries so we feel this is way the district can free up millions of dollars and use that money to help bring us to county average.

Gale says San Diego teachers salaries are still ranked at the bottom compared to other county school districts.
