San Diego city Mayor Jerry Sanders held a joint press conference with County Supervisor Greg Cox today to announce lessons learned from the 2007 wildfires. However, they released separate reports on how to improve the region's emergency response in the future. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.
The San Diego region does not have a unified fire fighting strategy, a situation underlined by the separate reports put out by the City and the County. The city's 55 page report has almost 100 recommendations; the county's 70 page report has a 39 point improvement plan.
Mayor Sanders says the reports don't solve the big question of how to coordinate fire fighting resources county-wide, but they do suggest ways to improve the existing system.
Sanders : This report is an after action report, not a strategic plan, it's important to understand the difference, this report memorializes lessons that we've learned and makes some very important recommendations.
More brush management is one important recommendation. FEMA has granted the city $2 million to clear dry brush.
Both reports say San Diego must build its “surge capacity” to better mobilize resources in the first 48 hours of a wildfire, before help arrives.
